Mandolin players know that Flatiron instruments are legendary. They were constructed so well and were so popular that the Gibson Guitar Company bought them out so they would not have to compete with them. I myself have 4 of these (in different incarnations) and I am selling this 5th one only because it is so similar to one I already own (Model 2MF). The instrument for sale is a Flatiron Model 2MW that was made in Bozeman Montana in 1984. The "2MW" means it was model "2" in the catalog and the "MW" indicates that it was the highly desirable "Extra Fancy Western Maple" (see the curly maple back in photo 4). The top is spruce and the neck is mahogany. The color is natural and the hardware is nickel. This instrument shows little wear at all - no noticeable dings or scratch marks. It supposedly had a "slight" crack near the fret board but it was professionally repaired so well that I honestly cannot find it. There is also a very tiny chip of varnish loss on the back of the neck (photo 10) that is inconsequential. This instrument comes with its original plush lined hard shell case (photo 11). Tuners, bridge, and clam shell tailpiece are all original. The serial number inside the sound hole is 84012565 (photo 7) which means it was made in December of 1984. The mandolin has a brand new braided leather strap and a clip on tuner. There is plenty of volume in this model and the action is very good. Sound is sweet. This is a finely crafted vintage instrument that is becoming rare to find. My reference catalog indicates that this model sold for $396.00 thirty two years ago in 1984. I will try to make a sound clip on YOU TUBE so the buyer can get an idea of its sound. Just search for "FLATIRON Mandolin 2MW".
