Up for sale, a 1983 Gibson Les Paul Studio in excellent condition and in perfect working order. Produced early in the second year of production, this Studio is a unique example that came factory equipped with a Gibson-branded Kahler vibrato unit. This vibrato has been removed in lieu of a more traditional ABR-1 bridge and stopbar tailpiece combo, and a press fit piece of wood cleanly fills the vibrato route, although the guitar can also be reverted to its factory configuration with zero modifications, and the original vibrato is included! Of course the heart of this early Studio model is the pair of original Tim Shaw PAF humbuckers, which represent Gibson's first (and arguably most successful) attempt at recreating the magic of their late '50s humbucker design. These Shaws have a sweet, singing quality, with complex and rich harmonics and a very dynamic sound. This Les Paul delivers great growl and clarity in the bridge position, a balanced and detailed middle position, and plenty of warmth and fullness at the neck. The guitar weighs in at 8lbs 10oz and doesn't break the back, an impressive feat for a solid (non-weight relieved) mahogany bodied instrument! Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar and strung with 10-46 strings, this Les Paul is simply a joy to play with low, slinky action and spot-on intonation. The neck has a fairly slender C shaped profile with slender shoulders and a very fast feel. The original frets are in truly incredible shape, with perfectly rounded crowns and no notable wear, playing cleanly up the neck with no buzzing or dead spots. The nut measures a full 1 11/16" in width, and the face of the headstock retains the "Studio" truss rod cover and mounting screws for the locking string retainer which pairs with the Kahler. Present on the reverse side of the headstock, the original Gibson Deluxe tuning machines are present and turn smoothly with greened tulip buttons that have an authentic vintage look. All of the electronics work as they should, with untouched solder joints, original CTS pots, and the Tim Shaw PAFs, which both have the correct ink stamps on the baseplates. A Faber USA ABR-1 style "tone lock" bridge and tailpiece are currently installed on the guitar, and these newer pieces of hardware almost flawlessly match the light patina on the original pickup covers for a seamless look. Beneath the tailpiece, the factory Kahler route is original and unmodified, and the piece of wood is very tightly fit although no glue was used to keep the block in place to preserve the originality of the instrument and make it a viable option to switch back to the Kahler in the future if desired.Cosmetically, this is a remarkably clean and very well cared for instrument, which is still quite white and only faintly aged to a light shade of cream, without the heavy yellowing often exhibited on these early Studio models. There is very minor buckle rash on the back, as well as some very light finish checking, and one decent sized nick adjacent to the rear strap button, but no serious or structural wear of any kind! There are also a few faint lines on the sides of the guitar on the lower bout which have browned slightly to the shade of a toasted marshmallow, likely the result of a mild finish reaction from the guitar sitting in a stand for a prolonged period of time.
The original "chainsaw" hardshell case with Gibson logo on the exterior and working latches is included.
