~ SCHOOL OF KLOTZ 4/4 VIOLIN dated circa late 18th / early 19th C~

I have been given a collection of violins to sell for a retired friend. She told me they belonged to her late father who enjoyed these violins. There are quite a number to list when time permits. This vintage 4/4 violin is in good playing condition, and features an original red/ golden/ brown varnish. It will certainly benefit with minor adjustments. Apparently, the retired owner remembers as a child this particular violin bearing a red seal at the base of the neck. I believe it to be a vintage violin with good old dry wood. Peter Horner of Bromptons London viewed the violin 'in person' Feb 2016 and described it as a genuine Klotz circa 1790-1810 noting a verbal auction estimate of £4,000. Please study the pics. I am also advised another internal label near the interior upper rib reads : Max Brücken-Hammig jun. music-Instrumenten-und Saiten-Fabrik Markneukirchen I.S. This may be a repairer or supplier of old violins circa 1900.I assume the Horner appraisal to be accurate, other comments were Saxony circa 1800 and even a later attribution. It is handmade and the wood selections clearly dry and old.The tone is sweet and mellow, a good model, but not powerful under the ear. However, it is focused and very appealing under the ear, with a clarity of tone & evenness of play. It does carry well when one is listening to someone else play. Measurements are : Length of back 35.8 cm / Upper bout 16. 8 cm / Middle bout 11. 3 cm / Lower bout 20. 4 cm. Old repairs are stable, including a properly repaired sound post crack as seen in the pics. Note a beautiful one piece back. As mentioned previously, it is in playable condition, a new owner may wish to make individual adjustments for set up etc. I will ensure it is well packed and you receive it in ready to play condition.

We have changed strings to Corelli Alliance - and the sound is now really excellent. A nice rounded tone, very pleasing, mellow & sweet with edge, rich focused, well balanced and with ringing overtones.
