The Godin Montreal Premiere P-90 gives the P-90 lover a classically styled semi-hollow electric with that unmistakable P-90 punch. Lightweight, articulate and easy to play, the Godin Montreal is a versatile instrument that brings the virtues of semi-hollow tone within the reach of every player.Another winner from North of the Border, the Godin Montreal Premiere features:Semi-Hollow Canadian Cherry BodyDouble white bindingTruss-style carved spruce coreMahogany set net, 24-3/4" scale, 22 medium fretsRosewood fingerboard2 Godin P-90 pickups3-way pickup switchVolume and tone controlsGraphtech Resomax bridge and tailpieceSchaller strap lock buttonsDual action truss rodGodin Deluxe padded gig bagMade in CanadaList price $1895We are suckers for a good P-90 guitar, and being fans of the original humbucker Montreal, we looking forward to giving this guitar a spin. The first thing you notice with the Montreal Premiere P-90 is that it's got height adjustable dog-ear P-90 pickups. This is the first time we recall seeing this and it's a clever idea: You get the traditional look of the direct mount pickups, but the advantages of height adjustment.Godin makes use of some interesting alternative woods, and has employed cherry in several of their acoustic and acoustic-electric guitars. Cherry is acoustically loud, clean and produces a very clear midrange with nice upper end detail. Sonically it is crisp like maple -- but not dry sounding -- with good low end response. The grain is pretty nice too, and Godin Montreal's typically weigh in the mid-six pound range. The Godin P-90 pickups are voiced for a clean, fairly bright response without a hint of the midrange heaviness that sometimes occurs with P-90 pickups. No doubt the the cherry semi-hollow construction helps in this regard, and the overall tone is open and airy. The neck pickup has good attack qualities and very even response on both wound and plain strings. You won't find the scooped midrange of a Fender style pickup, and the overall tone is fuller, with more body and heft. However, it's no woody jazz box, and the Montreal does not lack for clarity or note definition. While P-90 bridge pickups can often be would on the hot/snarly side of things, the Montreal P-90 bridge pickup is bright and twangy. Like the neck pickup there is a good level of clarity, attack, and no exaggerated midrange bump that often happens with this type of pickup. It's very much a "60's" bridge pickup tone that is more certainly more Byrds than Bon Jovi. For our money, the neck pickup by itself and the neck+middle is where this guitar excels. And both pickups together create a lovely chime that has plenty of pop and sparkle that is reminiscent of classic George Harrison, Chet Aktins and in a more modern era, Johnny A or Brian Setzer. It's a classic tone for pop music, country picking, and lush-but-detailed rhythm work. The Godin neck is what you might term a "medium C" profile, measuring roughly .830" at the first fret with a relatively gentle taper up to the 12th fret. The fretwork consists of nicely finished medium frets that set up very easily to a .060" height at the 12th fret, and depending how hard you play you can go lower without objectionable buzz. The Graphtech ResoMax bridge is easy to adjust, and in our experience plays a part accentuating higher frequency harmonic detailWhile overlooked by many players, a good P-90 guitar is a great addition to any guitar collection. The Godin Montreal Premiere P-90 provides a clean burst of P-90 tone that is ideal for pop, rockabilly, jazz....or if you're in an Oasis tribute band. If you've never owned a semi-hollow electric, this is a great introduction to the genre. As a US Godin dealer, we can only ship to an address within the United States.
