Description

Up for auction today, is a total of (7) Vintage AM-17 Mic & Line Amplifiers made by Langevin in the late 1960’s. It took me about three years to find all of these components with the firm intent of putting together a (7) channel, all discreet, Class A, Mic pre system. What makes these units unusual is that that the AM-17’s being offered today have a gain control on the front panel. Rumor has it that these came from the United Nations, I cannot confirm this but this is what I’ve found from the research that I’ve done on these units.First off, let me say that these are all original unrestored modules. Sonically the AM-17 has all of the virtues of the Langevin AM-16; the AM-17 is basically an AM-16 on steroids with the capability of putting out more signal (just the size of the output transformer should give you an idea of the output signal level capability). They use no capacitors on the audio path within its elegant Class A, discreet, transistor circuit design. These units will get hot due to the amount of current that they need (notice the heat sinks on both sides of the units). Make sure you have plenty of ventilation around them.  The heat sinks work well but you can practically fry eggs on them. There is an option on these units to run them on high power mode…  +30dBm (low power mode) is good for most things - no reason I can think of to run it on high power mode. This is an entire package that comes with (3) original power supplies. A total of (7) Original Langevin TRY-7 Metal Trays and (2) Original Langevin Metal Racks to hold the TRY-7 Trays. Please note that one of the AM-17 has a slight dent on the front panel (a careless seller shipped it without properly protecting it) (No damage caused to the electronics). One of the trays has (4) female connectors and comes pre-wired (Please note, I have not checked the wiring of this rack, it is your responsibility to have a technician check this for you) and I have two extra female connectors. Total Female Connectors (6). There is currently an e-bay auction for NOS Female connectors that fit these units. The AM-17’s have a higher output than the Langevin AM-16's. The sheer sonic prowess of these units cannot be understated, think early 1970’s transistorized sound with plenty of low-end punch and headroom for days. These are the main building blocks for a knowledgeable technician to go thru them and turn them into the magical pre-amps that these are. Because of the Vintage nature of these units, these are sold “as is” the units were tested and were within spec when last checked.Keep in mind, each unit weights approx. 8.5 pounds so you’re looking at approximately 80 pounds to be shipped in separate boxes to avoid any damage.Input And Output Impedance is selectable between 150 & 600 ohms. Recommended strapping is for 150 ohms.I own an original Neve console with 1073 modules, when I compared these to my Neve's I found that there was none of the wooliness that 1073’s exacerbate between 200-400 Hz and the top end was more extended and natural than my Neve's. They sound unique, sad to see them go, but I have bills that need to be taken care of.Serial Numbers for the AM-17 GC modules are as follows: 10135; 10149; 10178; 10528; 10532; 10634; 10764The auction price is for is for all of the components listed above. You will be responsible for any incurred shipping charges, and duty charges. I will insure and declare these units at full value for your protection and my protection. Please note that the units will be shipped in separate boxes and there will be a charge for time and materials in making sure that these units arrive safe and sound to their destination.AS WITH ANY VINTAGE PIECE OF AUDIO EQUIPMENT THESE ARE SOLD AS IS. TRANSFORMERS HAVE BEEN CHECKED AND THE UNITS WILL NEED A COMPLETE OVERHAUL BY A COMPETENT TECHNICIAN IN ORDER FOR THEM TO BE OPERATIONAL AGAIN.PLEASE NOTE THAT SHIPPING CHARGES SHALL BE DETERMINED ONCE I FIND OUT WHERE THE UNITS NEED TO BE SHIPPED. PLEASE IGNORE THE E-BAY SHIPPING CALCULATORI will NOT ship these units to ITALY, RUSSIA, ASIA, AFRICA, SOUTH AMERICA or MEXICO as I have encountered tremendous problems with customs in the past in these regions.Cash pick up in Los Angeles can be arranged and encouraged because of the physical weight of these components.PLEASE ASK ANY QUESTIONS; I STRIVE FOR A FIVE STAR TRANSACTION ON EVERYTHING THAT I SELL ON E-BAY.
