This auction is for a Speiden SF12 stereo ribbon microphone. This is equivalent to the currently available Royer SF12, but this is one of the last ones actually hand built by Bob Speiden himself. Its serial number is 171. These microphones are renowned for their clarity, naturalness and freedom from off-axis coloration. The crossed figure-8 configuration enables the microphone to be used in X-Y (Blumlein) mode, and also in M/S, making it an exceedingly versatile single-point microphone. I have personally used it for full orchestra, solo piano, solo guitar, voice (for close miking voice, use a windscreen! It's a ribbon ...), and have always found it to produce exemplary results. The microphone is in excellent condition and has been treated with great care, and it and its accessories have only ever stored in clean, dry, smoke-free conditions. I am selling it with a splitter cable (one 5-pin connector goes to the mic; the breakout cable separates the two channels to two standard 3-pin XLRs: a microphone cable (about 12ft): a small Shure shockmount that was supplied with the mic (it works, but there are better options!): the elegant velvet-lined wooden storage box in which the microphone was supplied. There are some minor dirt marks on the box, and the bodies of the XLR plugs have the familiar 'plug rash' from being plugged in repeatedly, which doesn't compromise their functionality in any way; they just don't look new. The output is low, like all ribbon mics, though the self noise is also gratifyingly low, but please take this into consideration when partnering it with a preamp. The microphone is in full working order at my premises as of the date of this auction.                                                                                                                                                                                                            The following is the technical specification of the Royer version of the microphone, which is effectively identical. Royer bought the design from Mr Speiden.
