If you get a chance to get your hands on an original Telefunken ELA M 250 or 251, you will be dealing with one of the most sought after, and arguably most beautiful sounding microphones made. These models were created by AKG in 1958, commissioned by Telefunken, who no longer had the rights from Neumann to distribute the U47. The 250 featured the same hard switchable cardioid and omni modes as the U47, while the 251 also featured an added bidirectional mode to compete with newly developed Neumann U48. AKG also developed a special molded plastic housing for the amplifier, so that a critical part could be replaced in minutes, should anything go wrong during a recording. The added manufacturing cost for this model, as compared to the AKG C12, which employed remote polar selection, caused Telefunken to cancel production in 1965, and it is believed that only 3,700 of the ELA M systems were ever created. With the new ELA M 251, Telefunken Elektroakustic, has gone through every painstaking detail to ensure that it is 100% true to the original, [the parts are interchangeable with the 50+ year old originals]. It features a CK12 capsule provided by AKG Acoustics GmbH, and a Haufe made T14:1 ratio output transformer. The ELA M 251 (as opposed to the ELA M 251E) was originally created to satisfy the standardized requirements of the German and Austrian national broadcast systems after World War II. It features the AC701 tube, a small triode vacuum tube known for producing a very rich and opulent tone with exceptionally low self-noise and microphonics, the ELA M 251 has achieved legendary stature in the modern recording industry.Questions?
