and now for something completely different...OK, sometimes I have to go for the obvious lead in, but this time it's trueModal (formerly Modulus) - escape the ordinary.  Look, the standard synthesizer has been done to death.  Circle, Square, Triangle, Wave, I got them crystal clear by the hour.  Oh wait, it's supposed to be - sine, square, triangle, sawtooth into a 24dB LPF.Really?  That's new and exciting to you?  One lump oscillator or two?  I like my synths black, like my cables.B-O-R-I-N-G !!Enter this funky thing - white chassis, big black knobs, nice display,   Hmm, oscillators, filter, LFOs, envelopes,... seems bog-standard.But wait - there's more. That filter - there's a slope parameter.  What's that?  The oscillator section - Wave?  Why is it labelled wave?  There's a DeRez button.  I also spot a joystick and something called Animator in addition to the sequencer and arpeggiator.  Maybe they've got something going here after all.The fact of the matter is that Modal is doing a lot of new things here.  The oscillators are NCOs with 50+ different waveforms to select from for each oscillator.  I'm not going to explain NCOs because I'll probably get it wrong.  For the terminally curious/nerdy, I'm sure there's posts on forums plus tech talks on YouTube about them. The variable slope filter allows you to smoothly morph it from a 4 pole LP to a band pass to a 1 pole LP and some interesting things in between as well.  The Animator allows you to sequence multiple parameter changes **per voice** with a host of options for timing, slew, skipping, etc.  Modal has finally made the manuals available on their website, so I'd recommend downloading it and giving it a readthrough.Oh, by the way, the 002 is 12 voices and 12 part multi-timbral.  So you can have multiple parts being played live while other parts are being played by the internal sequencer while other parts are being played by some external machine.  Or you can set the same patch up on 12 consecutive MIDI channels (1 voice per part) and have polyphonic aftertouch, pitchbend, etc available if you use some of the new breed of controllers like the Roli stuff, Linnstrument, or similar. The fact of the matter is that this is really too much synthesizer for me.  I have a couple old polyphonics lying around that I use and don't have any use for some other advanced Modal features like an internet connection and a web-based editor.  Fact of the matter is that I have no computer in the studio and certainly no internet.  In fact, I don't even have any power.  Everything runs off batteries and I use candles for illumination.  So this 002 is way too advanced technology for me.This 002 is actually an early Modulus version and it is working perfectly.  Serial number 50.  You know in your heart of hearts that the earlier Modulus ones sound better than the later mass produced Modal ones.  Of course if you ask Paul or Philip, they'll tell you it's all nonsense, that all of them are made to the same exacting standards and Modulus serial number 001 sounds exactly the same as Modal serial number 2001.Sure.Remember the red versus blue Andromedas? What about the first 50 Chromas?rev 1 MiniMoogs versus every other rev?rev 1 Prophet 5?LM-1 versus the Linndrum?I'm just saying.  25 Years On you'll be kicking yourself for not picking up one of the first 50.The Modulus 002 is 35 x 15 x 7, weighing 32 lbs before packing.  I will ship worldwide.
