Four piston valves, English 3 + 1 style, full compensating system. The bell is engraved "50 Medals of Honour (in a banner) / FB (logo) / BESSON / star symbol / LONDON-PARIS-NEW YORK / Made in England".Also stamped on the back side of the bell: serial number 578701, made in England in the mid-1970's.This is the original model Besson full compensating system euphonium that established these instruments as the finest available decades ago. Besson compensating euphoniums are still in production today, now made in Germany and elsewhere. This one is an original, with the construction and playing qualities that established the legend. The instrument is all-original except for the finger button on the fourth valve. Original valve pistons are in superb condition and tight in the casings with good compression.Dents and dings have been removed in our shop, but the euphonium has never been seriously damaged. Lacquer finish on the bell was worn, so we decided to lightly polish and re-lacquer the bell. Original lacquer finish on the body is 90% intact, now oversprayed with new lacquer from our shop to protect worn areas and preserve the brass.
Very good Besson #5 mouthpiece is included, along with a new SKB hard case which fits the euphonium like it was made for it!
Original English Besson euphoniums are increasingly difficult to find. New Besson 4-valve compensating euphoniums now have a suggested retail price over $13,000 and a "street price" about $7,500.This one's a best buy at $3,850!
