Jacques Albert French bassoon that probably dates from middle to late 1930s. The Albert family of Belgium of woodwind makers was established by Eugene Albert born 1816 and died 1890 and is well remembered for the Albert system clarinet. His three sons, Jean Bapitiste, Jacques and Joseph Eugene continued woodwind shops. The son of Jacques, also by that name, was an active woodwind maker from about 1920 to 1950. Albert bassoons most often were sold and used in Belgium and England. Another Belgium instrument maker that is more well known is Mahillon.   The instrument pictured is a beautiful example of a late Albert bassoon in nearly perfect original condition. It is made of rosewood, comes with two bocals ( I don't know if they are original but are both quite good.) The instrument has some of the same key features a  Mahillon but the bore size and sound of the Albert is closer to a Buffet. It has high E and D keys plus change in placement and action of several keys on the boot which improve forked B flats. The instrument plays very well with a very good resonant low register. For the very high notes, I find that a modern Buffet bocal is better. The instrument probably was tuned to A-435 but will play at A-440. The case is one of the handsomest well made cases that I have seen. It is all beautiful wood. Price $2500, shipping in lower 48 is $50 and about $100 worldwide.
