For your consideration, today we are offering one very rare, and desirable item! Here is ONE ALTEC 436 A , COMPRESSOR / LIMITER AMPLIFIER, WITH EARLY SERIAL NUMBER, AND SOME MODIFICATIONS. This ALTEC compressor, comes from the estate of a former audio repair tech, and appears to be a very early production example. It's serial number of 256, indicates this is one of the first of these famous limiters made by Altec. Unfortunately, the original face panel has been removed, and replaced with a custom panel, made from a Stromberg Carlson blank . The level control seems to have been eliminated, but the original ALTEC panel meter is present, and functional. I have carefully powered this unit up (using a variac), and found that it does pass sound, and amplify. This would indicate that the original PEERLESS transformers, are in good order. As you can see in the photos, this unit has the early grey hammertone painted chassis. The chassis is in very nice clean condition, and what modifications that have been done, were done NEATLY, and no damage to the internal wiring done, as you can see in the photos. The ALTEC panel meter, has a slight stress crack at the top of the plastic, but it is minor. Unit utilizes peerless input and output transformers, number 16402 and 4651. Although this unit has been slightly modified, it is a very nice, and rare piece, which would make a great candidate for restoration, or further modification for your own audio limiter project! The grey front rack panel, which does fit over the chassis, is not attached, and would likely have to be attached, or bolted to a rack for proper attachment.
