Description
Brand: Wolff Size: 4/4
MPN: 1118 Country//Region of Manufacture: Germany

The Wolff brothers, Leopold and Ferdinand, setup their factory in Kreuznach ( Prussia ) in 1864 and produced very good quality 'trade' instruments. Each instrument was also subject to 'special tonal improvement', the exact method employed being a factory secret. The brothers retired in 1912, at which stage production was handed over to Leopolds' son, Julius. The example offered here is typical of those produced and has a two piece maple back of a strong medium- broad curl descending across the back from the joint. The ribs, pegbox and scroll are of a similar curl. The varnish is an orange-brown colour on a yellow ground.Beautiful maple grain in the wood on the back and sides. Note the symmetry in the grain as it goes around the sides and back of the violin. It continues as a full and beautiful tiger grain in the neck and scroll of the violin. There are several other special features in the finish of this violin. There is the black outline of the scroll and on the edges on the side of the violin at the F hole area. The perfluing is straight with nice and has consistent bee stings in the corners. Not only is there value in the presentation of this violin, there is value in its construction. The spruce on the top adds to the resonance and fullness of the sound. Inside there are strips of bracing wood around the inside edge of the violin that come flush to the top and bottom. The blocks are of better quality wood and set in more firmly. It shows quality wood and workmanship. This is reflected in the high quality sound that this violin produces when played by a skilled violinist. Label Reads: WOLFF BROs
