1964 is the second year of production of the D40, making it a very rare guitar. It was produced along side the D50 and the two models became known as the ultimate bluegrass guitars - the D40 with Mahogany back and sides, and the D50 with Rosewood. This example has a fair amount of playwear, and has benefited from this with a very mature tone, giving away it's 50 years of play. It sounds resonant and punchy, with a full tone and great clarity and definition. It's a very responsive guitar, with a very comfortable playing action, and a great feeling soft V profile neck. It's a great looking guitar, the top has turned a nice honey colour and the iconic Guild tortoiseshell scratchplate contrasts beautifully. There is some great looking lacquer checking and two professionally repaired top cracks, which both feel strong. It comes in a non original hard case.
