CHARLIE ALLENCustom Mouthpiece MakerChicago Custom Built Trumpets -- Trombones – CornetsBest Kept Secret in Jazz! If you are new to the Charlie Allen story, you may wonder what the big deal is. Let me enlighten you. Charlie Allen was born 108 years ago in Mississippi. He migrated to Chicago in the 1920’s. He was educated by Major N. Clark Smith, “America’s Greatest Colored Bandmaster,” at Wendell Phillips in Chicago’s Bronzeville community. Phillips produced many famous talents including Jazz greats; Nate King Cole, Gene Ammons, Dinah Washington and Ebony magazine owner Mr. John H. Johnson.Charlie Allen played trumpet with early jazz pioneers, Doc Cook, Fletcher Butler, and Hugh Swift. He flourished as a musician and mouthpiece maker with jazz legends Fatha Earl Hines and Duke Ellington.Charlie Allen made mouthpieces for dozens of musicians. Here are a few that we have researched. FAMOUS MUSICIANS WHO PLAYED ALLEN MOUTHPIECES TRUMPETS, TROMBONES & CORNETS Cat Anderson Al Hirt Louis Armstrong George Hunt Emmett Berry Aaron Izenhall Oscar Brashear Harry James Lawrence Brown Harold "Money" Johnson Paul Cerrano Jonah Jones Doc Cheatam Fats Navarro Sonny Cohn Fip Ricard Lee Collins Dave Rodgers Kenny Dorham Leo Shepard Roy Eldridge Clark Terry Phil Harper Ray Triscari Danny Harper Cootie Williams Michael Harris Bobby Woodlen Bobby Hatchett Willie Woods
Charlie Allen produced his custom mouthpieces on a lathe in his basement. His home was known has the “Trumpet’s Nest” as local students and professional musicians hung out, studied and practiced daily. One musician told me, “We played three times a night weekdays and four times on weekends, the mouthpiece helped with range but also endurance.” “Charlie Allen taught me how to be a professional Jazz musician!” CHARLIE ALLEN’S mouthpieces are one of a kind and very ornate in design, featuring diamond rims, floral designs, serpentine designs and sculptured rings. We believe Charlie Allen wanted to make sure his work was well known and that he got credit for his valuable custom designs, much like the Tuskegee Airmen painting their tales red on their fighter planes. It was bold, but necessary! We found a letter dated in 1942 from Louis Armstrong, talking about looking for Allen to make him a couple more mouthpieces. In 2012, funky session musician Willie Woods (Trombone/The Pharoahs) showed us two Charlie Allen Mouthpieces – one with his own initials and the second made for Lawrence Brown (Trombone/Duke Ellington)In 2012, session master Oscar Brashear (Google him!) was speechless and emotionally moved when we showed him a Charlie Allen classic Diamond mouthpiece. In 2013, Michael Harris (Phenix Horns/Earth, Wind & Fire) said. “Charlie Allen was a great guy” – “He would be standing on his porch waiting on me for my lessons”. “He was the man”!The last three years we have talked to dozens of musicians who knew Charlie Allen and appreciated his work with his custom mouthpieces. We are convinced that his work made a significant impact on Jazz music worldwide and is the Best Kept Secret in Jazz!Quality Is Forever!
