from California Music Supply… CarolBrass CFL-6200-GSS-SLB FLUGELHORN With the beautiful hand-scratched SATIN LACQUER FINISHED GOLD BRASS BELL CarolBrass is what is possible when computer aided design and machining is followed by hand fitting, assembly and finishing by dedicated artisans who consistently display their pride of workmanship in products with quality and performance that far exceeds the selling price. These are among the very best brass instruments you can buy at any price! How it’s built and what you get from CMS: CFL-6200-GSS-SLB flugelhorn in Bb .433” bore (11.0 mm) 6” (152mm) gold brass bell in SATIN LACQUER finish… …bell is hand scratch finished prior to lacquer (2) yellow brass tuning receiver/leadpipes (to fit large or small shank mouthpieces) Outer slide tubes and receiver outer tube are nickel Inner slide tubes are yellow brass CarolBrass unique design 3rd valve slide trigger Stainless steel close tolerance valves (same top-sprung design as CarolBrass trumpets) Lightweight valve springs factory installed Wood shell case w/music self-storage compartment in lid CarolBrass 3CFL mouthpiece, cleaning rod & cloth Ultra-Pure Professional valve oil incl. by CarolBrass Ultra-Pure Regular slide lube incl. by CarolBrass Ultra-Pure Light slide lube from CMS for 3rd slide BIG, RICH, SMOOTH, MELLOW, along with clear and nimble articulation high and low… that’s what you can get from this combination of an easy-blowing .433” bore and the large gold brass bell. Some flugelhorns are made with a .460” bore. Most of these can produce a nice, big sound, and some say it’s easier for a trumpet player to switch to because it feels more trumpet-like. I’ve owned some very nice .460” bore flugelhorns in the past, and was pleased with their ability to do fat and mellow, but the larger bore made it a challenge to control things technical in the upper range. .413” or .433” bore flugelhorns are much more nimble upstairs, and they can be easier to blow and afford cleaner high range playing. But this usually comes at the expense of tone quality. Historically you’ve always had to make a choice between big and small, articulate or mellow. With the CarolBrass flugelhorn you get it all. The .433” bore makes for ease of accuracy up high, and it is easy on the wind supply. But somehow by the time your sound passes through those amazingly wonderful stainless valves and out the large gold brass bell, it can have a richness previously attributed only to either large bore or a very few very high priced horns. There just aren’t any other flugelhorns known that play this well, sound this good and have our great intonation for anywhere near the price of these CarolBrass.
