Description

PROFESSIONAL VIOLIN LABELLED TOMASO EBERLE This is a professional quality European violin with beautiful wood and varnish. The one-piece back is of strongly flamed wood of narrow figure. The ribs are of matching wood and the top is of choice fine-grained spruce. The golden-brown oil varnish has a beautiful sheen on the back and subtle wear on the top. The perfectly inlaid double purfling has what appears to be poplar centers, with typical long "splits" and thin outer blacks. The violin is in excellent condition, as the photos will attest. A close examination will show a very fine, perfectly repaired crack under the right side of the finger board. This is nearly invisible and extends just past the end of the finger board, but not to the post area. The color of the photos on my computers is very true to the instrument. The violin has two labels, the first of which reads TOMASO EBERLE fecit Nap. 1774. I cannot guarantee the authenticity of this label, nor do I have a firm conviction on the maker. It is noted that there were a number of violin makers in the Eberle family. I have no hesitation in saying that this is a professional quality, European made instrument. It is in immediate playing condition, and was out on loan to a university violin professor and former concert master of a local string orchestra for about a month.  The second label is a repair label of Paul Herrin which was altered by cutting out the top left corner with the traditional "Fecit" (made by). Mr. Herrin's repair work apparently consisted of a button repair and it is possible that he replaced the head and neck. To me there are subtle differences in the head and the body of the instrument. It could therefore also be true that this once had a grafted neck. This label reads:  PAUL HERRIN, TERRE HAUTE, IND., 823 A.D. 1928.Length of back 358 mm, String length 328 mm, upper bouts 165 mm, middle bouts 114 mm, lower bouts 203 mm. I am starting the bidding for this violin at $3000.00 Can –which is only $2300.00 US. I cannot guarantee the country of origin of this instrument, or its maker, but I do guarantee its approximate age and condition. The number of genuine old instruments on ebay has declined tremendously since I first started following these sales, so I believe that this is a rare opportunity for a player or collector. I am 74 years old, recently suffered a serious heart attack, and no longer have the strength to do restorations. I will be offering for sale about ten violins that I have collected over the years. All will be described as accurately as possible but I will not offer returns unless there is an error in a listing, which seems unlikely. I intend also to list some books, bows, etc. This lot is sold as is, and without reserve, having been described as accurately as possible.  PLEASE READ SHIPPING AND PAYMENT INFORMATION STATED BELOW BEFORE BIDDING! This is an instrument to be proud of. It comes without a bow and will be shipped securely in a near-new rectangular foam violin case, not the case shown in the photos. I live in Ontario, Canada and the violin will be shipped from here. Shipping and insurance within Canada and the USA will be at cost, but the buyer is responsible for any additional charges such as import duties, brokerage fees or sales taxes, if applicable. Potential buyers from other countries should check with me before bidding. The successful bidder should check with me before making payment as the cost of shipping will need to be verified. Please note that the shipping calculator is not working correctly. The cost could be closer to $150.00 Can, but will be at cost with carrier options available to the buyer. Payment by PayPal. I reserve the right to refuse bids from persons with inadequate feedback records or from countries to which I do not ship. The violin should be shipped within two days of receiving payment, but with my health situation I have to rely on some assistance with packaging. Please check my feedback and email any questions.
