2007 C.G. CONN "VINTAGE ONE" MODEL 1BSSP-46 - SILVER PLATED BODY WITH GOLD TRIM - RARE SOLID STERLING SILVER BELL - MEDIUM LARGE BORE PROFESSIONAL Bb TRUMPET IN NEAR MINT PLUS CONDITION
I have been playing horns for 60 years...collecting and restoring vintage trumpets and cornets, and building custom horns for 49.  Over the decades I amassed a vast trumpet/ cornet collection.  During the past few years I have thinned out the herd and continue to do so.  All my horns are gig ready...cleaned, valves adjusted & aligned with new corks & felts when necessary. PLEASE LOOK AT THE OTHER HORNS I HAVE LISTED For your consideration, here is an 9 year old Conn "Vintage One" trumpet with a rare solid sterling silver bell in near mint plus condition that is in need of a new owner.  The horn is as close to factory mint condition as possible considering it has been the representative example of a V-1 in my collection for the past 9 years.  It saw very little use (perhaps no more than 20 hours), so the new owner will be able to break in the valves using their own specific finger mechanics.  Other than a few micro marks/ pings on the lead pipe and valve casings that are too small to photograph, and a tiny ripple on the bell just below the flange of the front main brace (Conn's purported quality control problems?), the rest of the horn is in flawless condition.  The original double horn case is in superb condition, but the mouthpiece has gone missing over the years, so I am including a gold plated V. Bach 3C mouthpiece.
I could discuss the merits of this truly incredible trumpet, but here's a quote from the Dec. 2001 JazzTimes by David Weiss that better describes the V-1:
"Vintage One designer Fred Powell is a man who knows our pain and is in tune with our psychoses.  He has designed a horn that utilizes, as he describes, the best qualities of all the previous Conn trumpets, including the 8B, a favorite of Freddie Hubbard and Lee Morgan, and of course, the legendary Connstellation (38B).  After designing the horn, he road-tested the prototype by having professionals from all fields try out the horn in their work environments, getting their feedback and fine-tuning the horn to meet their needs. The basic horn is solidly constructed and has many excellent features, such as a short valve stroke and a bracing system reminiscent of the earlier Connstellation.   What makes the Vintage One a horn for our times, however, is the numerous options you have to choose from when picking the right horn for you.   As for the basic trumpet itself, you have a choice of three different bell materials: yellow brass, rose brass and sterling silver.  These then come with your choice of finish: either clear lacquer silver or 24-karat gold-plated or silver-plated with a gold trim or satin lacquer.  Then you have your choice of leadpipe: the standard #46, the slightly more focused #34 or the more open #50.  These options of course are also available with a reverse tuning slide and MVW (Modular Valve Weight) bottom cap system accessory kit.  While I scoff at the myriad of options, the system really does have its merits.  I like the 1BR a little better with the rounded tuning slide.  All the horns have a clear, clean tone with a solid core and a nice, even blow."I special ordered this custom trumpet with the Sterling silver bell (Conn will gladly charge you $1,318. for a new bell should yours needs replacement), gold trim kit, a brass full radius tuning slide with gold lacquer to match the trim kit (I had no use for the additional "D" shaped, semi-restrictive slide), Amado rather than the standard lever style water key, and standard #46 leadpipe.
This Vintage One is a heavyweight 2 lb. - 12.1 oz. (with all the MVW bottom caps installed) trumpet that will accommodate virtually any music style and acoustic venue.  The trumpet has a very clear and resonant tone that is easily controlled...its sound is big, powerful, centered and focused thanks to the solid Sterling silver bell that will never allow a note to "crack".  It is a very free and open blowing horn with a rich, dark tone that produces a sophisticated and brighter edge when pushed, and loves to be piloted in the stratosphere.  This horn has excellent intonation...the low register is not flat, and is very resonant.  The 5th harmonic is great, and so is the upper register intonation.  Slots are superb.  Responsive and flexible, the Vintage One makes a great jazz or commercial horn, and even does well in studio sessions.  When it was still available, the retail price was $5,246. with a deep discount price of $3,419.
Except for the aforementioned extremely minor blemishes, the trumpet is in mint condition both outside and in.  The valves look like the day they came out of the factory, thus allowing the new owner to break them in utilizing their own specific finger mechanics.  The rest of the trumpet functions flawlessly.  You will not find a nicer Vintage One with a Sterling silver bell out there unless you are lucky enough to find one that's New Old Stock.  I tend to be overly critical and as accurate as possible when describing my horns, so that no one receives any "surprises".  So, bid with confidence as I think you'll find my feedback speaks for itself.
