Up for sale, a 1965 Mosrite "The Ventures" model bass in structurally sound and honestly played condition. This bass has earned every scrape, nick, and battle scar on its body, and it's rare to see a Mosrite that's been given this much love and use over the decades. The instrument is quite a beast tonally, and the early Mosrite single coil with smooth pickup cover is wound nice and hot for a thick, growly thump that has a full midrange presence and plenty of smooth lows as well. For an instrument that has only a single pickup and pair of knobs, there's a surprising amount of versatility to eek out of this Spartan setup, with the tone knob accentuating the top end content of roundwound strings when turned up, while things smooth out with a soft bloom when you dial the tone knob all the way back. Acoustically, the value of the years of constant use this bass has endured are immediately apparent, and this Mosrite has a clear, defined, and resonant tone which you simply can't get from an instrument that hasn't been played, and this one's been played a ton! The bass weighs in at a manageable 8lbs 11oz and balances quite well on a strap despite the far out body contours. Professionally setup and strung with 45-100 roundwound strings, this Mosrite is ready for years of future use.The neck has a medium C profile, with consistent depth and fretboard width as you move into the higher registers of the fretboard. The original frets are intact and while quite flat and low, the bass plays cleanly all the way up the neck with no untoward buzzes or dead spots. The bass features a zero fret and a 1 1/2" wide original aluminum nut, while the scale length measures 30 1/2". On the headstock, the original tuning machines have been substituted for larger and more reliable chrome tuners akin to what you'd find on a vintage Fender, with large clover buttons. The baseplates of these tuners have also been cleanly reshaped to accommodate the slender shape of the Mosrite headstock. The original "The Ventures" logo is clearly displayed at the top of the headstock, and this headstock is also notable for being an early version with a cleaner look and no truss rod cover, as the access point is at the heel of the neck. The electronics work as they should, with original Centralab pots that date to mid-1965. Early features of the body include the mint green pickguard, smooth pickup cover, and smooth knobs that predate the "M" knobs which would subsequently be introduced. The body routes are original and untouched, and the original bridge, aluminum/rosewood tailpiece, and original bridge cover are all present. Cosmetically, it would be difficult to find another bass with this much wear, yet no structural issues of any kind. There are zero cracks or repairs on this bass, and what remains of the original vibrant three-tone sunburst finish has heavy finish checking, along with gouges, dings, nicks, and heavy buckle rash. None of the wear affects the playability or performance of this bass in any way, and this music machine is ready to be put back in action. The original brown faux alligator hardshell case with red plush interior is included. The case features new latches and a repositioned handle.
