Description
Offered here, in 100% "as last used by him" condition, is Stevie Nicks/Fleetwood Mac's recording engineer's "drum tracking" mixer, a custom BBC 6x2 mic mixer, built by Neve in 1979-80. This was acquired in trade from the recording engineer who did all of Stevie's records back to her post-Rumours Fleetwood Mac days. Comes with FULL DOCUMENTATION FROM THE BBC, including schematics, structural frame drawings, and etc. As can be seen by two schematic pages shown, it has a discrete transistor first stage on each amp card, and a hybrid opamp-discrete output stage. The transformer input/output card contains a mix of LL/76MSC and LL/81MSC transformers, made by either Marinair or possibly Lundahl. Or maybe Sowter. These are, according to what I can find, BBC-designed transformers of extremely high quality. The unit as a whole is designated as PA6/100. The preamp cards are designated AM5/30. The faders look & feel nicer than P&G, and I suspect they are Cinema Engineering, but they are not obviously labeled, other than the Neve branding on dress panel, so this is just a guess. Offered exactly as-is, no warranties expressed or implied. I can only say that the engineer in question stated it was working fine & "sounded great" the last time he used it, which was some years ago for drum tracking on a Stevie record, but, again, I do NOT guarantee this to be the case, so you MUST be prepared to do some work on it or acquire pro service for it. Quite obviously, it needs the external wiring figured out & repaired AND requires an outboard power supply. The documentation contains all needed info to accomplish this. Although I am a vastly experienced electronics professional, I do not have the time nor the specific expertise to put this unit back in operational condition myself. It should be noted that it is not 100% certain that the unit was built by Neve, but the evidence is fairly strong: 1)Obviously Neve fader dress panels, which are quite obviously original to the unit. Seems extremely unlikely that BBC would have provided Neve-branded parts to an alternate contractor. 2)The engineer to whom this belonged has a long history of working with & on Neve gear, and stated this is a Neve piece, by both nature of design AND sound. 3)The circuit design is very much in line with this. The BBC documentation is "source design", formatted per BBC standard to be sent out for bids, so, as expected, does not mention Neve or any other makers. Historically, even when BBC co-designed a piece like this with a specific manufacturer, with that manufacturer promised the contract to build, it was required by law that they write up a design proposal to be sent out for bids, thus the absence of a build contractor name in the docs. Overall, I have very high confidence that it is Neve-built, but this can not be guaranteed.
