And be sure to listen to the soundbyte here at the top of this description. All Huber banjos are hand made in Hendersonville, TNOne thing that sets a Huber Kalamazoo apartfrom Huber’s other models is its 14” radiused fretboard. Huber banjo company is considered to be among the small number of premium, professional banjo builders in America for their ability to produce the fat, clear and wide ranged timbre known as the “prewar sound”. Of course, only a prewar banjo can have a prewar sound, but the quality of music produced by this banjo are definitely exceptional. The Kalamazoo has traditional elements but is also unique, as it has a maple neck and a mahogany resonator. This combination accentuates the best qualities of both Maple and Mahogany banjos. The maple neck will help enforce sustain, while the mahogany resonator is intended to enhance a warmer tone, that is, not harsh but pleasing to the ear.
The neck binding and the twin concentric purfling rings on the resonator are of ivoroid. The traditional nickel-plated hardware is in outstanding and bright condition. The Kalamazoo embodies a combination of traditional construction materials put together in a uniquely singular way that defines the Kalamazoo, and what a great combination of ideas Steve had when designing this banjo. It has an exacting vintage style, one-piece zinc flange some might call “pot metal”. Brazilian rosewood was used for the fretboard, the banjo has four precise geared tuners in the headstock with grained ivoroid buttons and a geared fifth string tuner. The beautiful Kalamazoo inlay pattern is an artist’s creation of imaginitive shapes and patterns that are a delicate and cohesive design. The double-cut headstock has a black ebony overlay with the Huber script inlayed in mother of pearl.condition and playability:When we acquired this banjo we knew it was in excellent shape but it had higher action than it should. It also had the wrong head on it, it should have had a Huber head on it, so I contacted Steve Huber and we agreed on an appropriate refurbishment to shape it up. I had Steve replace the head with his Huber branded head, re-cut the neck heel to the correct angle, clean it up and polish the brightwork and put a new set of Huber’s branded string sets on it. Of course this was all on top of his great set-up which he threw in. He performed his magic to make it just right and returned it to us. When it arrived it was just beautifully cleaned and polished, It has a Huber head on it again just like it did originally and of course it sounds tremendous and plays smooth as glass with the proper low action. There are a lot of traditional features built into the Kalamazoo, but Steve Huber had a real “custom job” way of thinking when it went into production. I think of it like it is a customized made-to-order banjo that went into regular production. Of all of the things he included it its specs is the single design feature that sets it apart from most banjos– the radiused fretboard. Many players say they absolutely love the radius. If you have never played a radiused fretboard you might be concerned that it may throw your playing off. Let me ease your fears about it because for me, it feels really great, and I’d never played one before. I’d guess that at its very worst you might not even notice difference over the feel of a flat fretboard because its affect is really subtle. It in no way takes away from my playing, and some players maintain that the radius actually helps them reach some positions. For me it’s hard to say if it improves it or not, certainly there’s nothing about it that marks it as more difficult to play, and in time I could very well say it makes a positive, real difference. There are some great players who find them a real benefit to their playing. I personally love this banjo and the radiused fretboard in the Kalamazoo is an added value feature that you are certain to really like. It is best to use a Radused banjo capo and I will include a new Shubb radiused capo with this banjo. What really impresses me about this particular banjo is of course its marvelous tone, ease of playing and the really fine job Steve Huber did in both construction of the banjo and its recent refurbishment. It’s a real winner in my book and I’d be very proud to perform with it. The setup is dead- on and the sound is incredible! It has a very nice used case that is provided with the Kalamazoo. It is included in the sale. Railroad spikes are already expertly installed at positions 7 and 9. If you would like any more please let me know. We install them for our customers free of charge. The only blemish I can find on this banjo is behind the neck between the nut and the fifth fret, where there is a very small nick in the finish. This requires no refinishing and we have left it alone. A photograph of this area is posted. There is no buckle rash (scratched up resonator from a belt buckled player). The Huber banjo head is brand new. New heads require readjusting and I will re-adjust the head according to Steve Huber's specs before it is boxed up to ship to you. I will be sure to include a banjo head wrench in the case for you in case adjustment is ever needed again. I will ship this banjo to you anywhere in the 48 United States without charge. This banjo is priced appropriately based on its type and condition. This is truly a professional instrument hand built at the Huber factory in Hendersonville TN.I am convinced you’ll find the Kalamazoo to be the best playing and sounding banjo you would likely ever own. You’ll likely love the radiused fretboard and never go back to a flat fretboard again! Remember too that we back this sale up with our 14-day customer satisfaction guanrantee. This means you’ll have 14 days from the date of its arrival to play it, look it over, try it out, and if for any unlikely reason at all you want to return it we will accept it with a full refund minus shipping charges.Buy with confidence from Beyond Guitars.
