Description
Brand: Ludwig Exact Year: 1971

Here for sale is a beautiful 1971 Ludwig super classic black oyster Pearl drum set! All three drums are stamped February 1971 inside. There are no extra holes in this set. The year on the bass drum has been smudged off, but it is safe to assume it was made shortly after or before the other two drums. The original blue olive badges on all three drums were replaced with vintage blue olive badges from a similar set of Ludwig's due to damage to the original badges. Because of this the serial numbers hold no significance to this particular set. A lot of care was taken in putting these new(old) badges on, however some scratches on the inside of the shells around the badge hole can be seen from the replacement process. This is the second version of Ludwig's black oyster wrap, and is very cool looking! I will now take the time to describe each drum individually.               Let's start with the 22 inch bass drum. All of the chrome hardware shows minor wear such as scratching, general imperfections from age, and some light pitting. Some discoloration on parts from age can be seen. The t rods and claws on the bottom of the drum show the most age, and at least one of the t rods is slightly bent. This is all very normal, and overall everything is quite nice and function properly! A nice 60s Ludwig logo head is included on the front of the drum! Both hoops show small cosmetic imperfections from age such as paint chipping, dents from T rods being torqued tight, and general age wear. The spot where a bass drum pedal would clamp to shows the most wear. All of the original inlay is intact and on tight on both hoops! Heads fit and spin well on both sides of this drum! The bearing edges are in nice shape on both sides of this drum also! Drumheads tune up well and sound great! This is an unpainted interior drum, so minor factory cosmetic flaws can be seen. The wrap itself is in nice shape, however shows normal scratches and some light to moderate dings throughout from use and age of course.  A small hairline crack in the wrap can be seen next to the badge, however due to the nature of the pattern it is hard to spot unless you know it is there. A slight amount of lifting can be seen on both seams, however the wrap is on tight. Luckily this is on the underside of the drum, hard to spot, and minor. Again this is all normal wear for a drum of this age. The coloring of the wrap remains in great shape! This is an incredible sounding bass drum!              On to the 16 inch floor tom. The date stamp on the inside of the shell reads February 26, 1971. The bearings on both sides of this drum are in nice shape! Drumheads fit and spin easy on either side of the drum! Minor cosmetic imperfections can be seen on the inside of the drum due to the nature of the clear maple interior. All of the Chrome shows wear from age such as pitting, scratching, and some light discoloration with little bits of rust spots on the rims themselves. Everything is clean and as shiny as it can be however. The muffler unit turns to a certain point before it seems to lock up. All of the parts are here however, and function well with the exception of the muffler unit. The rubber ends on the floor tom legs have seen better days for the most part, but get the job done. One of the floor tom legs is slightly bent. The color on the wrap itself is in very nice shape. Scratches, dings, and imperfections can be seen throughout the wrap. Due to the nature of the pattern, these are generally hard to spot. Some light lifting can be seen at the seam, however the wrap is on the drum tightly. An original near mint condition late 60s Ludwig head is included on the top of this floor Tom! This drum tunes up very well and sounds awesome!                 Last we have the 13 inch rack Tom. The bearing edges on both sides are nice, however they show factory minor cosmetic flaws that would usually be covered up by the eggshell white painted interior shells. A few small gap's can be seen at the bearing edge, two on the top and one on the bottom, however these are factory(and common) and do not effect the tuning and sound of the drum itself. The inside of the shell shows some scratching and what appears to be some glue residue. The inside of the re-ring below the actual bearing edge on the bottom side is a little bumpy and rough, however this is below the bearing edge and does not effect the tone(pictured). I have seen many Ludwig's with these factory flaws. The date inside the Shell reads February 8, 1971. All of the chrome parts are in decent shape, but showing wear from age such as light pitting, scratching, and general age wear. The muffler unit works well. The coloration on the wrap itself is in very nice shape. The wrap shows scratches, dings, and some places with rash from rubbing against other drums and parts. This drum definitely shows the most wear on the wrap out of the three. The worst of the rash in the whole drum set can be seen right above the badge(pictured). Again, due to the nature of the wrap pattern, imperfections like this are harder to notice. When this Tom is placed on the bass drum the badge faces the wrong direction. I feel this is because at this point in Ludwig's production they were not making a lot of super classic kits(3 piece). Most drum sets being produced by Ludwig at this time were double tom kits. So it makes sense that they would've been drilling these drums to sit on the right-hand side of a drum in mass numbers rather than the left. In the factory they grabbed the shell from a pile of shells intended to go on a double Tom kit. This is why I believe the badge placement is as it is. There is some very light lifting at the seam most notably above the lugs over top of the seam toward the edge of the drum(see picture). This drum tunes up great and sounds amazing despite these minor problems!                    Overall this is a very cool set of Ludwig's from an era that did not commonly make super classic kits. I have done my best to cover all of my bases with imperfections, however please don't hesitate to ask any questions at all. Because I only have the option of adding 12 pictures I have done my best to picture the imperfections that I feel are the most substantial. Please note that there are scratches and dings with various depths of rash throughout different areas of the wrap. These areas are very hard to see in pictures  due to the nature of the pattern of the wrap. If you need to see additional pictures of any part of this drum set please feel free to ask and I will email them to you. This drum set is being sold as is, as described, as pictured. PayPal will be the only accepted form of payment. I do not ship outside of the United States. Again, please feel free to ask any questions, and thank you for looking.
