Natural French Horn by Greer, after F Stohr, Prague, c 1800
Estimated price for orientation: 3 200 $
Category: French Horns
Class:
Description Brand: Greer Bell Material: Brass Type: Cor d'Orchestre Skill Level: Professional Finish: Brass Lacquer Country/Region of Manufacture: United States
Replica of an original Bohemian natural horn with crook set. Horn was gently used for 20 years in university studio. The Stohr horns are very playable and free-blowing, and so extremely popular for replication. The sound is rich and colorful, and the intonation is precise, in terms of the overtone series. The condition is very good. The horn was lacquered, and is about 70%. All major dents removed; no patches, no cracks. Ferrule is nicely ornate, and the pipes are gracefully "thrown". The crooks follow the original plan, with a "Master" G crook, and couplers for F, E, and Eb. Using the couplers in pairs give D and C horn. Crooks for the higher or lower keys are available, according to the buyer's wishes. Bell diameter is 12 inches, and bore is .439 inches. While a modern mouthpiece can be used, optimal results will be achieved by using a reduced shank mouthpiece with an historic cup. Such mouthpieces are available, with your choice of screw rim, for maximum comfort and greatest ease of hand stopping. The horns pictured with enameled and gilded bells are shown for demonstration purposes, as this celebratory and protective practice is also an option. The garland pictured is also an option. The horn being auctioned currently has a plain bell. Happy bidding!
