Adolphe Sax Bb tenor saxophone, s/n 18,xxx. This saxophone was made around 1910 by the son of Adolphe Sax, Adolphe-Edouard Sax on Rue Myrha in Paris. The sax is in excellent condition for its age. The nickel plating is original and almost all intact. The sound of this horn is large and resonant. It speaks clearly through all of the registers. Although I think that this horn will appeal to collectors, it is a charming player that has a wonderful, full sound. The horn just received a full overhaul and restoration by the same repairman who repairs saxophones and other rare instruments for the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. He also owns several Adolphe Sax saxophones himself, so he has a great eye for preserving the integrity of an instrument such as this. The horn plays in tune at A=440, so it can be played with other modern instruments. This isn't always the case with saxophones over a century old. It seems to play better in tune with itself with large bore mouthpieces. Although this is an original Adolphe Sax over a century old, it plays much like a more modern saxophone. The octave key is integrated, so you don't have to manually switch between different keys depending on the range you're playing. Although the sax doesn't still have the original case, it will come in a used vintage case that is a good fit for the sax.
