1983 Manuel Reyes Sr. "1A" Flamenco / Classical Guitar "Celebrity" OwnedI purchased this beautiful 1983 Manuel Reyes flamenco guitar in Jerez de la Frontera in 2002 while in Spain on vacation. The person who I bought the guitar from was at that point the second owner of the guitar. The guitar was originally custom built for Arnie Coppe by Reyes. Arnie was the chef at Donn Pohrens famed finca in Moron, Spain during the mid 1960’s. He is mentioned in Donn Pohrens famous flamenco text; "A Way of Life". The book is still in print & you can find mention of Arnie on pages 84-85. I still have the original bill of sale from Manuel Reyes to Arnie as provenance. This invoice will of course accompany the guitar in its original case. The guitar itself is 100% all original. There is moderate 'honest playing wear' on the guitars finish. Considering it is 33 years old though; it's in marvellous condition. The original French Polish has aged to a warm “Honey Hued” Patina. There is the typical thumb wear around the soundhole , a few string burns behind the bridge, as well as a few scratches on the sides The neck is is perfectly straight. Frets are in very good shape with virtually no real signs of wear; as is the ebony fingerboard. No 'gouges' from left hand fingernails 'digging in'. All perfectly smooth & level. There is one minuscule 'less than hairline split' on the lower bass bout right above the interior lining. It is so tight that I thought for years it was just a check in the finish. It's that unnoticeable...However, I took the guitar to famed local guitar luthier / repairman; Alan Beardsell who commented that it so minute, it's virtually negligible. However, I did have him apply a small dab of hot hide glue to it on the inside of the guitar. It is 100% issue free & guaranteed not to advance further.
Scale length is 'standard' Reyes of 655 MM. Nut width is 54 '+' MM. This nut width is extremely comfortable if you happen to have 'larger than usual' hands, ( as I do). However, my flamenco guitar teacher of many years, who has relatively small hands, absolutely loves the feel of this neck. Reyes' neck carve is "Perfection". Somewhat of a 'Universal Fit'.
Tuners are the original Fusteros & they still work reasonably well.Golpeadore is also original & still 100% intact & protective. Please look carefully at all of the photos. I have many more that can be sent to you upon request. If the are 'specific' areas you you'd to see pics of; just ask me for them. This guitar is an absolute dream to play & listen to. It has a very sonorous voice. Depending on the attack on the strings, it can sound very much like a flamenco negra. Yet with an aggressive approach; it definitely has the fiery flamenco "BITE" of a great Reyes blanca!I am selling only because I have not played flamenco guitar for many years now. So it is a shame to have this wonderful instrument just lying idle in its case. It should be played!Manuel Sr. has earned the well deserved title of "The Worlds Greatest Living Flamenco Guitar Luthier". This 1983 model is stunning example of that claim. Many collectors & professional players actually seek out Reyes' early 1980's models as they are the ones that most feel Reyes built at his "Peak" period. It is the Reyes guitars of this era that Tomatito, Vicente Amigo & many others search to find. Just spending a few minutes playing this guitar will easily show 'why'...Unfortunately & very sadly, Manuel Reyes passed away in October of 2014. So to obtain a 'New' Reyes is impossible. His son is now building, but as many will attest, he still has a long way to go to achieve the stature that his father Manuel Sr. has attained over the years. Here is a short video of the Reyes being played. Please make sure to have the settings on 1060 High Def & use the "Full Screen" setting. I am open to 'reasonable' offers. Lowball offers will be ignored.
