1823 Jonas Chickering began his own business in Boston. Chickering Pianos were of superb quality and design, coupled with a partner who was exceptional at marketing his pianos. Chickering became well known throughout North & South America. In 1843 Jonas incorporated his concept for cast iron frame in a concert piano, and an improved version of this piano received unparalleled praise at the first International Exposition held in 1851 at the Crystal Palace in London, winning the top awards. Henry Steinway attended a concert featuring a performance on a Chickering grand piano. He was entranced by the experience and it provided inspiration to start Steinway & Sons pianos. In the mid 1800's Chickering was the largest piano manufacturer in the United States. There have been Chickering pianos in the White House. Abraham Lincoln owned a Chickering piano. 1852 Jonas made his three sons Thomas,Frank, and George partners in the firm. In 1867 following the great Paris Exposition of 1867, Frank Chickering had the Imperial Cross of the Legion of Honour, then one of the worlds most prestigious non-military awards, bestowed upon him by Emperor Napoleon III for services to the art of Music. Chickering is one of the most powerful and rich sounds possible, especially the bass. Chickering sold it's business to Baldwin in 1983. Here is our families 1979 Chickering & Sons Grand piano. The keys are perfect along with the hammers and original strings. This piano sounds beautiful in your home and on the concert stage. It was built by the original Chickering family. The bench is new. This beautiful piece of musical history ebony grand piano measures 5ft 7in deep by 4ft 11in wide by 38-1/2 inches tall. It has been played by our seven family members for 37 years. You will not be disappointed once your fingers dance across the keys and this work of art starts singing throughout the walls.
