Description

The name on the head stock is Jedson.  This is an amalgamation name from J. Dallas & Son in the 1930's.  An English banjo maker, he was heavily influenced by Slingerland Banjos USA.  Almost every part of the pot is identical to a Slingerland banjo part. This is a standard banjo, and so it's scale is 22 & 3/4 " from nut to bridge. This banjo came to me in a terrible state.  It needed a new fret board, nut, head, strings and tailpiece.  Plus a complete strip down of every part, including a non-adjustable carbon truss rod and abalone dot markers and Jescar frets fitted.  A new set of phos bronze strings, a new Brazilian rosewood bridge from Blacksnake Banjos, which are the best there is, were fitted too. There are a set of tuners on the banjo which are vintage Gibson Planetary Tuners, worth at least £100.The tone ring is a Bacon style, sitting on a solid steel ring, which itself sits on brass studs.  The banjo heel has been re cut to accomodate the action, and as you can see there has been some alteration to the dowel stick end.
The resonator is in very good condition, and has been stripped and re varnished.  I prefer to play it without the resonator on, but that is personal preference. How does it play?  Banjos of this quality, which have a standard scale, with this type of tone ring assembly, sound tremendous for Celtic music.  It is set up to play Irish and Scottish music, which it does very comfortably, and has a sound which is remarkable for that purpose.  At the moment it is bridged higher, so if you wanted to bring the action down I will supply extra bridges. The banjo comes with a second-hand tenor banjo case.
