Up for sale, a 1959 Gretsch Clipper Model 6186 in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order. After Gretsch moved away from DeArmond pickups and before the Hilo'Tron would be introduced, the Clippers produced from 1959-60 had a very rare white sopbar single coil pickup like the example seen here. Paired with trasparent DeArmond mini speed knobs and a newly slimmed down 1 3/4" body depth, this Clipper is a simple, straightforward, and surprisingly versatile vintage Gretsch. The tone is spanky and clear acoustically, and through the pickup there's a distinct twang to the top end and sweetness to the lows. The guitar weighs in at a mere 5lbs 4oz too! Professionally setup and strung with 11-50 roundwound strings, this Clipper has been dialed in for optimal intonation and comfortable action. The neck has a slender C profile with a thick slab Brazilian rosewood fretboard, and the original frets are in excellent shape, with plenty of height and well rounded crowns. The bone nut measures a full 1 11/16" in width and the headstock retains the original truss rod cover, "Gretsch" waterslide decal, and stock Kluson Deluxe single line nickel tuning machines. These tuners retain their stock white buttons, turn smoothly, and hold pitch as they should. The simple electronics work well, with a unique hexagonal riser beneath the white single coil pickup, and a pair of small transparent Volume and Tone knobs made by DeArmond and original to this model. Visible through the bass side F hole, the original Gretsch label is intact and clean. The original floating compensated bridge, chrome Gretsch tailpiece, and pickguard are present as well. The pickguard is missing a chip adjacent to the neck, but still mounts properly.
The warm three-tone sunburst finish is 100% original with no touchups or overspray, with light finish checking across the top and particularly near the knobs. The original binding is in great shape with no shrinkage or disintegration, and aside from some minor scuffs and nicks on the body as a whole, this is a very clean and well kept vintage Gretsch!
