1917 MARTIN BOWL BACK STYLE 1 MANDOLIN, 29 MADE THAT YR, ORIG & HARD SHELL CASE, CLEAN Most astonishing 99 year old Martin Mandolin in crackfree condition, all original, with Brazilian ribs and spruce top. This beautiful mandolin doesn't look anything like "antique" but is truly amazing. This is a Style One mandolin, with 22 ribs in Brazilian rosewood, uncracked, with clean playability with an ebony fingerboard and bridge, original silver plated engraved tuners and tailpiece, genuine ivory knobs, tortoise pickguard, and the original cloth and a newer hard shell cases. Serial number is right for 1917 (range 5008-5762). Twenty-nine Style 1's were built in 1917, and catalog price was $25. In 1917 the "side guard" pickguard replaced the one that went around the bottom of the soundhole, so that feature's correct for the estimated date of manufacture. Martin is a very well-respected name in stringed instruments, but Martin bowl-backs, were unique to them at the time. It's well-constructed, and is of interest because it's a Martin and the Nazareth, PA showing on the back of the headstock. General makeup of this mandolin is a Spruce top, Brazilian rosewood back (22 ribs), and Tortoise shell pickguard. This 1917 Martin Bowl Back Style 1 Mandolin is a used item in strong VG+ condition for its age and use. There are no major marks, dings or issues with this instrument with the exception of some pack mark and light surface scratching. Some minor age marks can be seen, but they are pinhead size and not impacting of the finish or performance. You will receive this item well-packed in a hard shell case but without its original paperwork and original packaging.
