This unique vibrato-equipped USA Fallout combines G&L's classic P-90 pickup with their house-wound humbucker for a new twist on the classic rock machine. The retro butterscotch blonde finish has an old world flavor, but rest assured this is an instrument for the new age.

Developed in 1946, a good P-90 possesses a magical blend of single coil attack and midrange punch. But over-winding and over-potting has often given it a bad wrap for being oftentimes dull and one-dimensional. Rejoice! G&L's P-90 is moderately wound with a resistance in the low 6K range, putting it on the "weak" side of most P-90's. But there is more to pickups than just resistance, and G&L's P-90 is a clean, open sounding pickup that will dispel the any bad rep about the breed. Plugged into both our Bassman Reissue and Mesa F-50, it's got good attack, with enough high end to cleanly separate the notes without sounding edgy or shrill. In some respects it's maybe not a true "vintage" P-90, but who cares when it sounds this good. It's great for jazzy clean tones, and maintains clarity and note definition at various levels of gain. With this pickup G&L has nailed the balance between output and fidelity, creating a strong pickup that never sounds harsh or over-cooked.As of July 2015, the standard bridge pickup in the Fallout is a G&L AW4470B Alnico Humbucker. Its name is a code for its build, telling you it was wound with an ALNICO magnet using 7000 turns of 44 gage wire. The higher the number gage, the thinner the magnet wire is. So with the many humbuckers using 42 or 43 gage wire, 44 gage allows the builder to get more turns on the bobbin to achieve more output. According to Seymour Duncan himself, each gage wire has "a sweet spot" where it is as hot as can be without losing clarity and definition. He should know, and the AW4470B is a close cousin to the Duncan JB in design and specifications.While this pickup is solidly in the high output range, it surprised us with a good amount of clarity when pushed through our F-50 with 4x10 cabinet. We suspect that the vibrato bridge adds an extra measure of shimmer and "spring" as compared to the firmly planted standard Saddle Lock bridge. Compared to the Seymour Duncan JB humbucker that used to be standard in the Fallout, the G&L AW4470B has a bit more midrange warmth and can get pretty mean without being overly brash. When tested with our Kalmazoo Love Pedal overdrive, it's crunchy and harmonically packed with a tight low end, a touch of upper midrange snarl, and a quick attack.By pulling up the volume knob you can also split the coils, and the humbucker does a pretty good single coil impression in the split mode. Clean and crisp, it's got a single coil "clang" that is somewhat more akin to a Tele than a Strat. It's totally usable, and probably best when combined with the neck pickup for percussive, snappy Nashville tones.The inclusion of the G&L dual fulcrum vibrato bridge does add a little additional "shimmer" to overall character of the guitar, possibly at the expense of a touch of low end. On a guitar that's fairly bright to begin with, a vibrato bridge can sometimes push it over the edge. But on the Fallout there is little downside, and the stability of the G&L design is such that it's never a liability...even if you never use it.The neck on this guitar has G&L's #1a "Slim C" profile. It has the same radius and nut width than their former #1 'Classic C' just without the depth. It is a nice marriage of G&L style and vintage sensibility, which makes for a comfortable neck that newcomers and G&L veterans can enjoy.In a world dominated by the "big three shapes" it's hard to be different without being dismissed as a gimmick. But the G&L Fallout is a guitar that grows on you. Hooked up to a vibrato bridge, the G&L P-90 just blossoms, and combined with a smokin' bridge pickup, there's both great contrast and great synergy.
