Up for sale, a 1958 Supro Rhythm Master "Val Trol" in exceptional condition and in perfect working order. Identical in wiring and design to a Supro Martinique (save for an earlier, smaller wooden body instead of the 1960's fiberglass design), these guitars feature two absolutely stunning sounding Supro oversized single coil pickups and an additional hidden pickup located *inside* the compensated wooden bridge. This third pickup is what gives the Rhythm Master the "Val-Trol" designation, which was Supro's term for this unique piezo style pickup. With recessed volume and tone controls in the body adjacent to each pickup (and conveniently out of your pick path), these 1950's Supros are incredibly well designed tone machines, with a trio of distinct tones from the pickups that range from shimmering, acoustic-esque clean, to overwound single coil punch to smooth, mellow jazz tones at the neck. Weighing in at 8lbs 2oz, this is a first year model and a 100% original example save for a new bone nut! This guitar has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with comfortable, low action and a fresh set of 11-50 strings. The neck has a chunky V profile down near the nut that graduates to a full C as you move into the higher registers of the fretboard, filling the palm nicely and fretting easily. The fretboard sports block inlays and original slender fretwire which is in great overall shape, having been recently leveled and crowned and currently showing virtually no wear. A new bone nut has been carved for the instrument, measuring 1 11/16" in width, with ideal string spacing for easy chording and accurate lead work. On the headstock, the small, metal "Supro" badge is intact and in great shape with blue lettering. The original gold Kluson single-line tuners all turn smoothly and still hold pitch well with Supro's signature "tulip" tuner buttons. On the body, all of the stock electronics work as they should, and the pair of single coils in oversized gold covers deliver full, well-rounded tones with a balanced EQ response and a bit of twang on the top end. Each pickup has its own volume and tone control, which you can preset with a small flathead screwdriver by turning the pots adjacent to each pickup. The master volume and three-way pickup switch allow for more conventional, on the fly tonal tweaking as well. The electronics are untouched, with original solder joints and Stackpole pots that date back to the 25th week of 1957All of the original hardware is present, including the trapeze tailpiece, switch plate, switch tip, Dakaware Master Volume knob, "lightning" bold Brazilian rosewood compensated bridge, and of course, the stock raised pickguard. There is moderate wear and oxidation on the original gold hardware, and some of the pinstriping and "Val Trol" logo on the pickguard has faded over the decades, but overall this is a particularly clean and complete example. In terms of cosmetic wear, there is very little to report, with moderate, targeted buckle rash on the back just north of the large black electronics cavity cover, along with a few smaller nicks around the edges of the carved body. There are also two tiny string tree holes which were doweled and touched up on the face of the headstock, along with a very slender and slight fretboard separation crack on the first 1/2 of the first fret on the treble side edge, which was also touched up and professionally repaired. The vibrant and unfaded three-tone sunburst finish is otherwise 100% original and this is easily one of the nicest and earliest Supros we've ever had in the shop. The other noteworthy feature of this first year model is the unique way the body was routed. Most Supros from 1959 onward have a fairly extensive "swiss cheese" routing from the backside of the body, but this Rhythm Master has clean and minimal factory routes that logically follow the wiring layout. The result is a Supro that has a more solid and resonant body than 99% of the vintage examples on the market! The original hardshell case is included. Notably more plush and heavy-duty than later Supro/National rectangular cases, this case has a clean gray thatched exterior, white leather ends, original and functional latches and the original handle.
