OVATION BREADWINNER/VIPER 111 HYBRID
unique and rare
Here we have a mid 1970's Ovation Breadwinner, serial number E3578, which I have owned for approximately 25 years. About 16 years ago the preamplifier broke down and was beyond repair, and as I found the sound of the passive Ovation mini humbuckers a little bland I acquired from Ovation a set of Viper 111 pickups to replace them. The rest of the guitar is as it left the factory in the mid-1970s, The Breadwinner is constructed with a 1-piece Honduras mahogany body with a Honduras mahogany neck and dot-inlaid ebony fingerboard. The finish is the same "spackle" textured finish as used by Ovation on their acoustic guitar bowls. The guitar has been my main slide guitar since I have owned it so while there is some fret wear it is minimal and there is plenty life left in them befor a fret-dress or re-fret will be needed. Pickup mounting bolt heads are coroded and there are a few dings here and there, but nothing major, just normal gigging wear and tear. Overall condition is very good and the guitar sounds great, producing a wide range of useable Fender-like tonesThe guitar is equipped with an original set of Ovation Viper 111 pickups, which are exceptionally good-sounding overwound single coils with high output and low noise. The pickup switching is unique in that if offers no less than 9 pickup combinations. The lower mini toggle is a standard 3-way selecting bridge/bridge + neck/neck. The second upper toggle switch (originaly activating a midrange notch filter) is an on/off/on 3-way which adds the middle pickup either in phase or out-of-phase to any position of the main selector switch, producing the following combinations: Bridge + middle in phase, bridge + middle out-of-phase. All 3 on (middle in phase) all 3 on (middle out-of-phase) Neck and middle in phase, neck and middle out-of-phase.
Complete with original Ovation brown molded hardshell case, also in good condition, all hinges and latches intact and workingPLEASE NOTE: This is a non-factory conversion using original Ovation parts. This guitar is passive. It no longer has the original active electrionics
