Finished in Butterscotch Blonde, the G&L ASAT Classic certainly looks classic. And the tones are classic and beyond. Made from Empress wood, this ASAT is very light with a tone that's a mix between Swamp Ash and Alder. Part of a 2014 run of just 50 guitars, this ASAT is guaranteed to be both musical, and rare.

Empress wood is technically known as Paulownia, as very fast growing hardwood native to north and south China, but has also been planted in North America. It has been used for many years by the Japanese for both furniture and musical instruments. It is very lightweight, dimensionally stable, and has a broad grain similar to Swamp Ash. Tonally, it bright and punchy like Alder, but has a more extended high end similar to Swamp Ash. It makes for a light, responsive guitar, and this particular ASAT is only 6.8 pounds, over a pound lighter than the typical Alder ASAT.Like all G&L ASAT Classic guitars, it's the MFD pickups that set it apart from your average Telecaster®. Using a fairly low DC resistance (around 5K) ceramic bar magnets, and soft iron adjustable pole pieces, the MFD pickups combine both strong output and an extended and natural frequency response. While the construction is reminiscent a P-90, the sound is broader, cleaner and with great clarity and note detail.Starting with neck pickup, if you're used to the slightly compressed, sometimes murky sound of a traditional Telecaster neck pickup, the ASAT Classic pickup is cleaner, more defined and with a very even response across the spectrum. It still has the round, warm Tele sound (especially with the volume rolled off a tad) but with better clarity and more snap. Played with a thumb and forefinger there's a lot of great soulful blues or country tone to be had, and they don't get mushy like a conventional pickup. The pickup responds nicely to moderate levels of overdrive -- or just a good amount of natural gain -- an yields nice blues-infused character while retaining good note separation. It's the kind of tone you can use practically on any song. With increasing levels of gain, the tone gets creamy and violin like and the pickup takes on a character almost like a humbucker, but with better top end extension. Personally, we prefer it best as a clean-to-medium-gain pickup, where it can display its broad frequency response and great touch sensitivity. The ASAT Classic bridge pickup is a great blend of output and sparkling clarity that won't take your head off. With with plenty of twang on tap, a smoother top end than a traditional Tele® pickup, and greater midrange girth, It's a delight for both Nashville pickers and jangly rhythm work. But for roots and classic rockers it's got the output and harmonic complexity to work great with pedals and gain channels. It's truly great lead pickup; more articulate than a humbucker, and enough bottom end to lay down tight defined rhythms. For rock and roots like Tom Petty, The Band, Wallflowers -- or check out Dawes --  it's totally spot on. But it can go beyond that: The strong output of the MFD pickup can push your amp or pedal into heavier regions never imagined for this type of guitar. Scooped metal it's not, but there is more than enough drive and sparkly overtones for classic or hard rock. But you can dial it back at a moments notice and regain the sweet clear tones that has made this type of guitar a true musical icon.Leo Fender intended the G&L ASAT to be the evolutionary successor to his original groundbreaking design. By making thoughtful improvements and enhancements, Leo's "plank" has evolved into a guitar that honors the sounds of the past but is fully capable of hanging with more modern styles of music.
