Up for sale, a 1966 Mosrite Joe Maphis bass in excellent condition and in good working order. This rare short scale bass features a hollow walnut body with a German carve spruce top for a tone that is articulate, thumpy, and midrange rich. Along with the Ventures, Joe Maphis was among a select few artists to have a range of Mosrite instruments, with the bass Maphis model being one of the least common. Strung with flatwound strings, there's a very warm and broad tonality to the bass, and the surprisingly loud acoustic voice of the instrument translates well through the original Mosrite single coils which are wound quite hot and measure 8.02k ohms in the bridge position and 7.92k at the neck. The bass also balances well on a strap and weighs only 8lbs 8oz. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, this Mosrite boasts low action and solid intonation. The neck has a round and substantial feeling medium C shaped profile with a smooth gloss nitro lacquer sunburst finish and Brazilian rosewood fretboard. The scale length is 30 1/2" with a nut that measures 1 1/2" in width, and easy access to the highest registers of the fretboard given the generous dual cutaways on the body. On the headstock, the original set of chrome Mosrite "duck foot" tuners are intact, and these tuners all turn smoothly and work as they should. Three of the original tuner ferrules are intact as well, while one is a similar replacement. All of the electronics are stock, including two original Centralab pots which date to late '66. The stock pickups feature their "Mosrite of California" black molded covers, and the chrome "M" knobs are present as well. The original bridge, chrome bridge cover, rosewood string anchor, tortoise pickguard, and milled aluminum switch tip round things out, and all components are original. The original nitro lacquer three-tone sunburst finish is intact and most vibrant on the top and neck profile, with the finish on the back of the bass being a bit more muted. In terms of cosmetic wear, this bass shows an assortment of chips and battle scars mostly located on the treble side of the body on the back. There is also one repaired crack which runs along the treble side of the body adjacent to the rear strap button, and some chips through the finish along the back edge of the bass side lower bout. The face of the bass shows prominent vertical checking and a couple decent marks into the wood just north of the chrome bridge cover. There is also some wear through the finish on the top edge of the headstock, and a few small marks on the face of the bass as well. This rare vintage Mosrite Joe Maphis bass has been professionally setup and dialed in for stage and studio work.
