Description
Though this guitar bears no Oahu marking of any kind it does have the Oahu headstock shape and the body shape and dimensions match those of some of the Oahu jumbos of the 30s, so I'm going with attribution to Oahu. The dating to the 30s comes from the Waverly tuners that were original to the guitar and on it when it arrived in the shop, which were definitely 1930s tuners. The guitar has a lower bout width of 15 5/8” and body depth of 3 3/8”, the scale is 25.4”. The top is solid spruce and is flat, the back and sides are maple (difficult to say if they are solid or laminate), the arched back is pressed as opposed to carved. The neck is maple, the fret board and bridge are rosewood. The tuners and tail piece are replacements, everything else appears to be original including the great old sunburst finish. The back and sides are crack free. The top has one crack repaired along the upper bout, this is tight, level and stable. All of the interior bracing is intact and secure. The neck is straight and solid and the angle good. The frets are new. The finish shows a little bit of wear around the sound hole (visible in the pics) and shows fine crazing throughout. It is missing the original archtop style pickguard, and the mounting screw holes for that pickguard (in the top up near the fret board and in the treble side near the waist) are exposed. The action is comfortable and intonation good with room to lower the action if desired. Set up for rhythm chord play, though the set up could easily be adjusted for any style. The sound of the guitar is something between a flat top and arch top in that it has the overall tonal quality of an arch top but with the sustain and projection of a flat top, interesting combination. Comes with an older gig bag that is a bit worn but the zipper is good and all the seams are solid. Rare and cool.Questions? Email me.
