Up for sale, a 1962 Fender Jazzmaster in exceptional condition, with a stunning and unfaded three-tone sunburst nitro lacquer finish. Easily one of the finest Jazzmasters we've ever had the pleasure of offering for sale, this '62 is the epitome of cool. This guitar is 100% original, aside from an original bridge pickup which was professionally rewound by Lindy Fralin to vintage specs.Powerful, resonant and extremely versatile, this Jazzmaster is everything you'd expect from a guitar produced in Fender's golden age and weighs 8lbs 2oz.  Acoustically, the guitar has a very authoritative sound that translates well through the two original black bobbin pickups. Able to deliver everything from sparkle and twang in the bridge position to wooly and complex tones at the neck, this Jazzmaster boasts a distinct and usable tone in every position. Flip a switch to the oft disregarded (and infinitely cool) Rhythm Circuit and you have a whole new palette of dark voicings meant to appeal to the "Jazz" player that never really got on with this instrument, but a tonal range that really loves a heavily overdriven tube amp or sputtery fuzz pedal in need of a bit of thickening. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar (where we specialize in vintage Offset Fender guitars) and currently strung with roundwound 11s, this Jazzmaster is dialed in to perfection. The one-piece maple neck has a moderately slender C profile, with a thick slab Brazilian rosewood fretboard. The neck profile fills out to a hefty medium C in the higher registers of the fretboard too. The finish on the back of the neck has been worn down to the silky smooth bare maple from years of honest use and is extremely comfortable on the palm for quick chord changes. The nut is just a hair wider than 1 5/8" and it makes all the difference in terms of string spacing, making chording easy and fingerpicked passages feel more roomy and easy to articulate. The guitar retains the original fretwire which is in exceptional shape, still having plenty of height and very well rounded crowns. Playing effortlessly in all positions with no untoward buzzes or dead spots, this guitar shows virtually no fretwear and the board retains the original 7 1/4" radius. The truss rod is very responsive and the neck is straight as an arrow with the ideal amount of relief. The original nut is present and while the heel of the neck notes that this guitar has a "B" width (1 5/8"), it's truly a bit closer to a "C" width of 1 11/16". On the headstock, the original Kluson Deluxe single line tuners are intact, turn smoothly and hold pitch well, even with heavy use of the vibrato unit. The original "Jazzmaster" decal is in fantastic shape, with unfaded gold coloring in the Fender font and only light wear on the "as" of Jazzmaster. All of the electronics work as they should, with a pair of early black bobbin pickups which read 7.71k ohms in the neck position and 9.5k in the bridge position. Both pickups balance very well in terms of perceived volume, and each pickup position offers a very distinct sound. As previously noted, the neck pickup retains its original windings and the bridge pickup was rewound by Lindy Fralin to vintage spec and also has new cloth covered leads. The wiring harness is still adhered to the aluminum pickguard shield with the stock masking tape. In terms of date codes, the Stackpole pots date to the 22nd week of '62. The grease pencil body date code lies beneath the bridge pickup shielding plate, reading 8/62, and the heel of the neck has a slightly earlier date of June, 1962.The original nitrate tortoise pickguard is present and in great shape, with the deep reddish swirls and more yellowed spots that are indicative of an early Pre-CBS tort pickguard. The guard sits very flat with virtually no warping, all original screws, and no cracks. All of the original hardware is present, including knobs, pickup covers, stock bridge, and original vibrato unit. The vibrato unit works flawlessly, responding to the lightest touch and fluttering with ease. For surfy shimmies, deep dives, and subtle warbles at the ends of your passages, the Jazzmaster vibrato is truly in a class of its own. The stock vibrato arm is intact as well and locks in securely, with the ability to stay put or swing freely while not feeling loose.Cosmetically, there are few Jazzmasters from this era that still have such a pronounced three-tone sunburst as this example here. Typically, the middle red layer is the first to go as UV rays mute this particular ring of the burst, but not so on this Jazzmaster! The blend between the yellow/red/deep brown layers of the sunburst is as consistent and bold as we've seen on any vintage Fender. The gradient between the rings of the burst is fairly subtle as well, and the nuances of this paint job are much easier to appreciate with the naked eye, as the camera lens adds a certain boldness to each ring that's not quite as prominent in person. The guitar has notable buckle rash on the back beneath the belly contour and central to the back of the instrument, with various small nicks and dings in the finish, mostly relegated to the edges of the body contours and back of the guitar. A few stray nicks are present on the face of the instrument as well, but nothing untoward for a guitar of this vintage that's been well kept and honestly played. South of the three-way pickup selector toggle and knobs, there is also wear through the finish on the side of the body. The chrome hardware and aged plastic parts are in great shape. The original brown hardshell case is included. The leather ends on the case are in great shape, and all latches are intact and working. The handle is clean and intact as well, and the orange plush case interior shows very little wear. It's one of the nicest brown Pre-CBS Fender cases we've had for sale, and it's been with this Jazzmaster for the past 54 years!
