This is a William Brown drum (brother of Eli) manufactured in 1818 and numbered 878. It has the original label. Former owners have inscribed their names inside shell. One was the infamous Clayton Holmes, who produced many Brown drum reproductions. This was the authentic original Brown drum he used as a model for his reproductions. It has been verified as an authentic Brown by the Moodas Corps historian and noted Brown drum expert Sue Cifaldi, attested to by previous owner Miles Kevin-Baron. It is in immediate playable condition and has been refurbished. The calf skin heads measure 17 inches across. The vent hole is of ivory. There are 4 double snare bundles for a total of 8 individual snares, and a screw type snare assembly. There are ten leather adjustment ears laced with catgut. There is no handle nor drag rope. The overlapped maple shell bears the distinctive Brown tack pattern with a circle around the vent hole, intricate design and 16 tacks bordering the design on the left and 13 bordering the right. The overall height of the drum is 17 1/4 inches tall. The rims are painted red and measure 1 3/4 inches across and the counter hoops measure 3/4 inches across. The shell, tacks, vent hole and rims are original, the ears, ropes and heads have been replaced. Case included. |
