Voccoli "Bridgecasters" are not your ordinary barncasters. They're from the "other side of the bridge," all hand made in Brooklyn, New York. Using reclaimed, salvaged and eco-friendly materials, they embody both the vintage and the modern, the antique but ever changing aspects of the historic borough. We're happy to present to you this guitar designed in tribute to Delta blues master Big Joe Williams - who famously modified his guitars with an extra three strings, creating unisons for the 3rd, 5th and 6th strings. Even if you don’t know him, you know his songs – both “Baby Please Don’t Go” and “Crawling King Snake” were first recorded by him. Williams would tune his guitar to open G and play rhythm and bass lines on the single strings – and then play lead and slide work on the doubled strings, creating a wonderfully large and fascinating sound to support his voice.Legend has it that he slowly added these three strings over time to stump his friends and stop them picking up and playing with his guitars. Despite that tale, not only is the 9-string design incredibly easy to play in open tunings, but also translates beautifully into standard guitar tuning. The unison strings add a lush texture to chords and provide a built-in chorus effect for lead playing. It’s basically mid way between a regular six string and a twelve string in terms of sound – it’s broad and lush but not too overbearing. This is a gorgeous tool for any style of playing and great way to add a truly unique texture to a song. The body of this guitar is made out of a solid piece of elm, finished in genuine milk paint - just like vintage barns all across America. The paint is then cured in vintage gunstock oils. The pickguard is made from oak and finished in the same method. The neck is a single piece of hard rock maple with a rosewood fretboard. The fretboard radius is 9.5" scale length is 25.5". The finish on both the neck and the body is artistically "road worn." The edges of the body and pickguard are weathered, and the back of the neck is sculpted to look as though it's been played for years. The choice on the neck is not simply for aesthetics though - the lightly finished maple back allows for speed, comfort and ease while playing. The pickups are GFS "gold-foil" humbuckers. Through modern innovation, pickup winders have perfected the gold foil design, replicating their chimney voicing without all the buzzing and hum. They're clean, have nice attack, and take coloring from distortion very well. The four way switch in this instrument allows you to get these pickups in both series and parallel. The tuners are vintage Kulson-style for a truly retro look. All the hardware has been hand brushed to simulate weathering. The floating bridge is made out of ebony, enhancing the tonal properties you'd expect from a regular solid body guitar. The lush sounds this instrument makes are other-worldy. Don't let the uncommon string configuration scare you away - the chordal textures are stunning and your solos will have a whole new flare.
