1967 HENRI SELMER, PARIS "K-MODIFIED" MODEL 24B - SILVER PLATED MEDIUM LARGE BORE PROFESSIONAL Bb TRUMPET IN NEAR MINT CONDITION
I have been playing horns for 60 years...collecting and restoring vintage trumpets and cornets, and building custom horns for 49. Over the decades I amassed a vast trumpet/ cornet collection. During the past few years I have thinned out the herd and continue to do so. All my horns are gig ready...cleaned, valves adjusted & aligned with new corks & felts when necessary. PLEASE LOOK AT THE OTHER HORNS I HAVE LISTED For your consideration, here is a spectacular silver and gold plated, near mint example of a 50 year old penultimate issue “K-Modified” Model 24B that is straight without dents, dings nor solder repairs of any nature. Having owned many Selmer models over the years, this 24B K-Mod was unquestionably the finest player of the lot. When the lacquer deteriorated, and the areas where the horn is held began to pit a tad, I had the trumpet silver and gold plated by Anderson Plating as well as having them re-plate the valves. The trumpet was then displayed in my collection and never played. Therefore, for all intents and purposes the valves are brand new with 100% factory spec compression, thus allowing the new owner to break them in according to their own specific finger mechanics. Designed by Keith Ecker (hence the "K" in K-Modified) and introduced in 1954, the K-Mod received instant praise and was popular with artists such as Maurice Andre, Johhny Coles, Hal Espinosa, and Red Nichols. The K-Mod was a slightly modified version of Selmer's top-of-the-line "Grands Prix" model. Mr. Ecker changed the Euro style mouthpiece receiver to an American standard receiver in order to accept Bach style shanks, beefed up the main braces a bit, and changed the rolled wire bell rim to a modified French rim...otherwise the horn pretty much remained a Grands Prix. This '67 version has a shortened mouthpiece receiver which became standard issue in the 1960's, and seems to be the only other "modification" until the end of production and the release of the Radial 2 Degree Model in the fall of 1968. This K-Mod is a medium weight (2 lb. – 6.4 oz.) free and open blowing, medium large bore trumpet that is easy to play and fill, and absolutely loves to be piloted in the stratosphere. The trumpet exhibits awesome flexibility and responsiveness, and is comfortable with most music styles and acoustic venues. It has the ability to cut through a section, but balances well with the other horns. Its tone is lush, dense, rich, centered, focused, and somewhat warm as one would expect from a top-of-the-line Paris trumpet built from high quality French brass. However, when pushed, it can become somewhat bright with a sophisticated edge and complex overtones. The horn slots superbly in all registers and has spot-on intonation.
This K-Mod 24B is in near mint condition. Mechanically, it is in superb “like new” condition with top sprung valves that were restored by Anderson with my preference of having the valves first copper plated before being nickel plated...thus the spring towers show the copper as they didn't receive nickel plate. Compression is back to 100% spec, and the valves now look like they came out of the factory last week. All FIVE slides operate with silky smoothness including the 1st valve slide trigger. Cosmetically, the horn's original lacquer was quite deteriorated, and the acids in my hand oil were beginning to pit the casings, bell tail, and 3rd slide tubes (areas where your hand makes contact). Since the horn was otherwise unblemished, I sent it to Anderson with instructions to NOT over buff the pitted areas nor anywhere else on the trumpet...thus the bell engraving, serial number, etc. still remain crisp and sharp, but one can still see minute ripples where the pitting once existed. Except for the aforementioned minor blemishes, the rest of the horn is in flawless condition. I tend to be overly critical when describing my horns and as accurate as possible, so that no one receives any "surprises". So, bid with confidence as I think you'll find my feedback speaks for itself.
