Up for sale, a 2011 H&S SG in exceptional condition and in perfect working order. One of the first instruments crafted five years ago by H&S guitars, this impressive neck through SG was the brainchild of Adam Hanson, the luthier whose name is the "H" in H&S, a brand which has transitioned into Patriarch Guitars. Both familiar and innovative, this SG endeavored to improve on this dual cutaway solidbody platform and did so in spades, utilizing tone wood combinations and construction techniques not typically seen on this model. Featuring a three-piece flame maple center with Bolivian rosewood stripes and African mahogany wings, this SG succeeds at providing the warmth, power, and punch of the traditional SG Standard tone, paired with the articulation and detail that comes with maple. Truly a best of both worlds scenario, this guitar fulfills the expectations of players looking for the feel and weight of an SG, paired with the tonal sophistication of a Les Paul. The tone woods on this SG compliment each other perfectly for a sound that is surprisingly commanding acoustically, with the kind of sustain that only comes with neck through construction. The pickups are a matched pair of modern Gibson ceramic humbuckers, with a 496R in the neck position and a 500T at the bridge. The bridge pickup reads just under 15k and this "super ceramic" design boasts enhanced lows and crystal clear highs, with plenty of punch. Despite the disparity of output at 7.9k ohms, the neck pickup's perceived volume matches very well with the neck (these pickups are marketed as a pair after all) and this pickup has a smoother, rounder quality that lets single note lines bloom and sing. The guitar weighs in at a modest 7lbs 6oz, and benefits from a thorough setup with 10-46 strings courtesy of the builder. The maple neck has a medium C shape profile that borders on the more slender side of things, and while the body is buffed to a high gloss nitro sheen, the neck has a satin smooth finish that feels great on the palm and allows for very fast position shifts up the fretboard. Further enhancing the top end clarity and dynamic snap of the instrument, the fretboard is a gorgeously figured piece of Macassar ebony, which is fitted with fretwire just shy of a medium jumbo in terms of height and width. Slender pearl rectangle position markers are inlaid on the fretboard, which also sports white binding and black side dots. The scale length is 25", and the hand carved bone nut measures 1 5/8" in width. On the headstock, a Macassar ebony overlay has a high gloss finish which is inlaid with the H&S logo, and a set of Grover open-back tuners with butterbean buttons top things off.
All of the electronics are top shelf components, with full-size CTS pots, clean wiring, and a Switchcraft jack and three-way pickup selector. Other appointments include a set of reflector cap knobs, chrome tune-o-matic bridge, and stopbar tailpiece. The body is finished in nitro lacquer and along with the peghead polished to a mirror sheen, highlighting the figuring in the maple and mahogany in particular. As this guitar is a very early instrument crafted by Adam Hanson and was designed as a testbed for certain aspects of the build, it has been toured and played quite a bit, although there are few cosmetic marks of wear of note. One additional strap button hole was added to the back of the bass side body horn, and there is faint, targeted buckle rash on the back in the clear coat, along with a couple stray finish scratches on the body as a whole. Overall, this is an incredible, handmade instrument for a bargain price!
A gigbag is included.
