This is a 1966 (serial number 226353) Reynolds Contempora Double French Horn. This instrument was originally built as a direct rival to the Elkhart Conn 8Ds of the period, and it plays very well. These horns play similarly to Conn 8Ds since they are both Kruspe wrap instruments, though the Reynolds has a slightly different tone and responsiveness. The valves move well with excellent compression and the slides all move of course. As for the aesthetic condition of this horn, there are a few dings and pings, as well as some light scratching and etching throughout the instrument (particularly the bell flare). All this is visible in the pictures, and none of it affects the playability of the horn. The engraving on the horn reads "R/ REYNOLDS/ CONTEMPORA/ ALBALENE, TEXAS/ FE・O3". This instrument has been professionally cleaned in our shop, and repaired to full playability. This horn is not lacquered; therefore fingerprints should be wiped off after use if the player wishes for the horn to stay as shiny as it is now; if they are not wipes off then the horn will develop a lovely patina. This instrument comes with a somewhat worn hardshell case and a mouthpiece in good condition. How the horn plays: Full, warm, round sound. Mellow and smooth tone. Horn is very responsive and free-blowing. The Bb side timbre is just a bit brighter than the F side. The horn has very good dynamic range, capable of a very soft yet full pianissimo and a very strong but not blatty fortissimo. The low and high registers speak very well and are easy to play in.
