Description Brand: Bocan Lajos Country/Region of Manufacture: Serbia Model: Bugarija Type: Tamburitza
This is a Serbian Bugarija made by one of the more famous and respected luthiers of his time, Bocan Lajos of Senta, as printed on the Inside Label. A Bugarija is a member of the Tamburitza Family, and is the instrument that is chorded (or strummed) to supply the rhythm in a song.HEre are the measurements:Length: 40"Lower Width 14.5"Upper Width 11.5"Depth 3" The "nut" (on the neck) Has one groove between lower 2 strings, and 2 superficial grooves between upper stringsThe extra bridge is slightly larger and has a groove at an angle. I do not know if this in intentional or some sort of flaw. (see pic)The 2 bridges measure as follows:On the instrument: appx 2-3/4" x 1/2"Extra bridge: 3" x 3.8"As you can see my Looking at the pictures of the instrument, overall it is solid. The wear on the face is because it had been used to chord or Strum. The wear on the top is only cosmetic and does not detract from the overall play-ability of the instrument. The present string configuration on the instrument is totally wrong. It appears someone tried to make a quasi five string guitar out of it. Examining the pictures closely those are guitar strings on the instrument. The case is very clean with a small crushed area on the back side that has been repaired. The inside label is clearly visible in the photos. I cannot read Croatian, but Bocan Lajos and Senta is very distinct. There is no date or serial number that I can find. My guess is this was made in the 1960's or 1970's. This instrument will more than likely need to be set up and adjusted by someone who knows about these particular type of instruments. It is in very good overall condition except for some wear in the finish on the upper part of the sound board (from strumming) and what appears to be a tiny hair-line crack in the spruce right at the top which is so small that it is hard to photograph. I can't tell if it is a crack or something in the grain of the spruce. The back, neck and sides are all intact without any signs of cracking or separations. There is some corrosion on the metal plate on the headstock. The frets all look good and the neck is straight. Email me for specific photos if you need them.
