Cornamusen (Renaissance windcap reed instruments) – a matched set of four instruments in 440Hz by the renowned maker John Hanchet of Norwich, comprising: Soprano in C; Alto in F with one key; Tenor in C (with a spare reed from the Early Music Shop, and a spare reed by Kernbach); Bass in F; And a purpose made hard wooden case, padded and lined with felt. These are windcap reed Renaissance instruments, similar to crumhorns, but straight and blocked at the end. They are quieter and perhaps more mellow than most crumhorns, and are both significantly quieter and less exhausting to play than rauscheiffen. These rare instruments were made for the renowned group City Waites, and are a matched set, consecutively numbered by John Hanchet. It would be a tragedy to split the set, and therefore I am not prepared to sell the instruments except all four together. Ideal for consort music. The instruments are currently fitted with plastic reeds, which due to the moistness of breath are a practical alternative to cane reeds. Two spare plastic reeds from EMS are included, plus a cane reed by Kernbach for the tenor instrument for a musician in search of true authentic performance. John Hanchet has been an acknowledged expert in shawms for several decades, with his instruments highly sought after by professionals and amateurs alike.
