The Godin Multiac Spectrum is a top shelf performance and recording instrument. Even the access panels for the electronics are wood veneer instead of the usual plastic. Like all Multiac guitars the playability is first rate, and for what is essentially an acoustic guitar, the action is very comfortable. This is a guitar you can gig with all evening long, and players used to electric guitars will not find the Multiac a chore or fatiguing. The Multiac Spectrum has 3 separate outputs: Neck pickup, Bridge piezo, and 13-pin Synth. You can run all three separately through different amplification systems, or you can combine and blend the neck and bridge outputs by plugging only into the acoustic bridge jack. The synth output is always through its dedicated 13-pin output, and you can balance the volume between that and the other outputs by using the slider closest to the neck. To see how it sounded we tested the Spectrum through our master of clean tone, the Fender Bassman. Unlike the lower priced A6 line, the Spectrum uses a spruce top, and has much larger chambered body with bracing, so the sound is noticeably more brilliant and expansive. The bridge pickup has a very natural acoustic tone with sparkling high end, and smooth midrange content. We've always like the sound of the RMC piezo bridge saddle system, and it truly lacks any of the crackly, quacky tone associated with piezo systems. There are fancier systems on the market, but the RMC system is remarkably effective. The Seymour Duncan lipstick pickup by itself is a nice jazz sound. It's warm but not too woody and it enhances the low end attack. The real fun begins when you start blending in the bridge pickup. The lipstick pickup helps to fill out the overall acoustic tone and adds warmth and roundness to the blend. As with the Godin A6, we find the most convincing acoustic tones are really a blend of the two pickups. Overall, the pickup combination is well balanced and the controls make it possible to navigate completely different genres with a single slider. The synth capabilities are a real game changer, and with a Roland GR series or other compatible product, the options to enhance your musical dictionary are endless. The synth tracking is excellent and it is an essential tool for today's solo artists or anyone who wants to add an extra dimension to their music. As with other Godin synth models, you can blend the natural guitar tone with the synth sounds to create a multi-layered musical soundscape.
