compressor. limiter. expander History: The Neumann U473 compressor / limiter / expander was developed in the 1970´s and build until Neumann stopped it´s engagement in analog mixing board designs in the early 1990´s. This was the main limiter for disc cutting in the vinyl era and from the late 1970´s on it replaced the TAB U73 tube compressors in most disc lathe setups. It was than used on 90% of all record in that time. Design: The Neumann U473 and U473a is a danner cassette module in size A1 and based around a vca design with compressor/limiter/expander functions which can be controlled independently from each other. The Haufe transformers inside are totally enclosed by MU-Metall and as with all vintage german broadcast modules the build quality is very high. There are two versions around. One is the U473 and the other one is called U473a. The only difference is the mono/stereo or lin/de-ess switch. The missing function however can be added with an external switch. If you want two U473a modules racked up as a stereo pair with link function, we can simply add an external switch to do that. The same is valid for de-ess the switch. Sound: The sound of the U473 U473a is often described as neutral and open. It glues the mix together very well and works great for groups, stems and mixbusses.
