Up for sale, a 1958 Silvertone model 1321, well loved, honestly played, and in good working order. Manufactured by Danelectro in the USA and synonymous with their U-1 model in all but name, this 1321 was built exclusively for Sears' house brand Silvertone. While little is known regarding the history of this particular guitar, the aesthetic modifications to the pickguard are undeniably cool, showcasing the name "Bus Kegley." on a piece of precisely cut card stock beneath a clear piece of acrylic. Bus fashioned a similar armrest to complete the look (which is also photographed and included with the guitar), and this Silvertone is a particularly soulful instrument that's clearly been played and loved. And with good reason, as the tone from the single lipstick pickup is as clear, chiming, and sweet as we've ever heard from a Danelectro. Weighing in at a mere 6lbs 2oz thanks to the hollow masonite and poplar body frame, there's a great hollow twang and crisp attack when you give this guitar an authoritative strum. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, this Silvertone has been freshly restrung and setup with low, comfortable action. The neck has a medium C shaped profile which has been worn down to the smooth, bare maple while still retaining the original shape and rounded shoulders. The thick slab Brazilian rosewood fretboard features the original fretwire which has significantly more width and height than most manufacturers of the era, bordering on medium jumbo in overall size. These frets show moderate uniform wear on frets 1-5, with fainter wear on the crowns of the plain strings until fret 7 and virtually no wear further up the board. We're happy to report that there is no buzzing or dead spots anywhere on the neck, and the frets have plenty of height and life left. The guitar plays cleanly in all registers and the neck is very straight, thanks to the dual "never warp" non-adjustable truss rod system. The stock aluminum nut is intact, and measures 1 5/8" in width. On the headstock, the "Silvertone" silkscreen logo is clean and intact on the coke bottle Danelectro headstock. Also present are the original open back tuners which still turn smoothly and work as they should. The simple electronics are stock, with CTS pots that date to late 1958 and the original tone capacitors. While the effect of the three-way tone switch is subtle, it is working as intended, with one setting engaging the tone knob, one bypassing it entirely, and the third engaging a cap that brightens up the signal a bit. The stock chrome bridge with rosewood saddle is intact, and the large cream knobs are original as well.Cosmetically, this guitar proudly displays the honest playwear it has received over the decades, with greening of the copper finish around the more prominent wear spots, and both the white primer coat and bare masonite top peeking through in certain areas, specifically on both sides of the pickguard and where the forearm crosses the top. There are four small holes in the top along the bass side lower bout for mounting the included armrest, which matches the pickguard and completes the original look Bus Kegley intended. Other light wear includes some small nicks and dings on the body as a whole, and this instrument is structurally sound with no compromising wear of any kind.A padded gigbag is included.
