I have a Gibson Les Paul exotic smart woood guitar here. This series of guitars has become quite respected in the years since they stopped making them. Virtually every thing that can be done to a les paul has been done to a les paul. What stands out to me about the smart wood series is that it is purely about rich tonewoods with unique sound properties. Nothing gimmicky about that. It is priced similar to the Studio range. This model sports a Cancharana figured top. This was the most rare of the exotic woods used. It reminds me a bit of walnuts in terms of it grain pattern and tone. Also what i have determined about this guitar. Is it is one of the earlier builds and has a 1 piece mahogany back. I inspected the grain pattern and you can see on the bottom heel area of the body that it is a 1 piece. That is a desireable feature that you will not find in today's builds in anything less than a Historic or Custom shop model. The guitar sounds like an LP. The subtle unique properties of the different woods to my ears show up in the midrange. Maple topped guitars have more compression to add to the clarity and distinction of the tone. I have owned a few exotics, and to my ears they have a more detailed open midrange. Warmer, with more detail. The maple gives you a bit more power and note seperation. The exotics give you a bit more midrange complexity. They sound the way they look. Which is to say interesting and curious. This one is in good used condition. See pics for condition. It has some mild fretwear, mild patina to the gold hardware and a little bit of body wear near the belt buckle area. However these lightly finished guitars hide these things better than high gloss guitars. it will ship in an older vintage Gibson Hard case to. The case has some wear and one latch needs resetting. But overall the case works fine. Thanks for reading! I ship fast and fully insured.
