This is an original Earl Williams trombone with the curved hand slide brace and the tuning in the slide. It is a solid representation of Earl’s attention to high quality design and craftsmanship. It has a 7” bell and a bore size of approximately .490. The counterweight on the slide is a disc engraved on both sides with a “W”. There is intricate engraving of a floral design on the bell. The engraving is sharp and true because the bell has not been buffed. Also engraved on the bell is “THE WALLACE TROMBONE MADE BY WILLIAMS & WALLACE LOS ANGELES CALIF”. According to , the Williams and Wallace partnership was formed in 1928 and the patent for the curved hand slide brace was granted November 25, 1930. Since the brace on this trombone is stamped “PAT.APLD.FOR” it is assumed it was made sometime between 1928 and 1930. The serial number is “18” so it must have been closer to 1928. There is no model number. The horn plays well in all registers and the pitch is consistent. The slide is straight with no dents or bows and moves evenly and quickly in all 7 positions. The horn has all its original parts. It has been repaired at many of the joints and some of the gold wash has obviously been burned by a torch. (See photos.) The work is solid and straight and the tuning wheel works fine. I am including an H.N. White #19 mouthpiece. From the H.N. White Family website it appears this mouthpiece is circa 1919. It fits well and plays well on this trombone. The trombone comes with the original case which is in good condition. I have made repairs to the case including painting it and replacing the handle.
