Estimated price for orientation: 699 $
Category: Guitar Amplifiers
Class:
Description
Original, Fender labeled, vintage JBL D120F alnico magnet, 8 ohm speakers. Matched pair in superb, 100% all original condition. Both speakers have the correct 21032 code. No rips, no tears, no cracks in the surround, no dents in the aluminum domes, terminals are perfect, cork gaskets are perfect, zero issues. Speakers have been tested and work flawlessly with no voice coil rub, no rattles, no funny noises. I was the first to remove them from the original Fender cabinet, acquired from the original owner. These speakers have seen very little use, were well cared for and have never been abused. They sound strong and fresh, with big, bold, clear, detailed, punchy, classic JBL tone. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a pair of vintage JBL's in prime condition. These early to mid 70's orange frame D120's have the improved cloth surround that retains flexibility and maintains the speaker's functionality well beyond when the earlier paper surround D120's will inevitably crumble and fail. The label may say "D120" but by this time these orange frame JBL's are actually the improved "K120". It's the best of both worlds: vintage alnico magnet "D" tone with a much longer "K" life-span. The orange frame JBL's are arguably the most desirable guitar speakers ever made and are a sound investment. I doubt they will ever go down in value...who knows what these might be worth in the future. This is a No Reserve auction. I will not end the auction early and I will not sell them separately. This pair belongs together. Payment via Paypal only and is due within 24 hours of end of auction. Please ask any and all questions before placing a bid. I will be happy to provide more detailed information or additional pictures to ensure you are satisfied with your purchase. Please do not bid if you cannot afford to pay. Speakers will ship for a flat rate of $85, fully insured, in the lower 48 CONUS. Alaska and Hawaii will incur additional shipping costs. Sorry, no international shipping. Speakers will be zip-tied together, wrapped in plastic, inside a snug, heavy duty box, inside a larger box lined with packing foam. I have decades of experience shipping vintage gear across the USA with zero issues to date. Due to the nature of vintage electronic equipment, all items are sold as-is with no returns. Check my 100% positive feedback rating and bid with confidence. Here are some quotes I found online in regards to JBL D/K 120F's:"Best by far guitar speakers ever made""I'm a "K" fan as well, coincidentally or not, from my pile of a dozen or so JBL speakers, the one K130 and one K120 I own are my favorites."Orange-frame generally uses a two-fold cloth surround. Bigger bass and smoother sound, though still plenty bright. Lasts a lot longer, too" "These speakers keep sky rocketing in price. Get them while you can. Lack of comparable re-cone kits will keep these speakers in high demand""In the K series, you can clearly see the difference. The cone joins to a cloth surround that has a "double bump" design, which is also doped for added strength, thereby overcoming the shortfall that was the flaw in the D series surround design. This was a vast improvement and resulted in fewer blown speakers.""I run a Hiwatt DR-103 through JBL K-120s and it is stunning. The clean nature of the Hiwatt through clean speakers at concert hall volumes is magic." "One of the best-sounding amps I've ever heard was a SF Princeton (non-reverb) retrofitted with a JBL K120. It sounded unbelievable. Very clean, very multi-dimensional, but never harsh. Also incredibly loud. I also got to use a BF Deluxe Reverb with an original D120 at a show and thought it sounded great as well - again, not harsh at all, even when the amp was pushed.""IMHO - searching out original cone D120's is a bit of a fool's errand in 2014. Those paper cones are very old and unless preserved under perfect conditions are quite prone to fail. You're much better off finding K's""K-120's will still have the Alnico magnet, but will have the sturdier cone material. They sound very much like the D's, are newer, and a bit more rugged" "I'm a big fan of the D series... but have stopped even considering them. The paper is pretty old and the K series cone material holds up much better." "I'd go for the K's...K's give you plenty of power (for most of us), and durability as you mentioned. Can't remember what the D's are rated for, but they certainly can be blown. The K's will give you more durability would be my guess. And the tone is always awesome." "I've been playing on this one k120 all day now & can't stop. I can't believe how much I underestimated how important a JBL is to the tone. Two K's it is!!!" "I've had 5 D's shipped to me in the last year, two made it in tact. 40 year old dry paper is pretty fragile. The E/K cone is much more durable." "I very recently picked up a JBL K-120 2x12 cab - 13 ply Finnish birch - and I was knocked out. They are amazing speakers. Get them if you can!" "Pretty sure that the K and the D are the same form factor... same mag and basket, but the rest is upgraded for more durability and power handling. Looking at mine, I can not see a difference other than the paint and label." "As an experiment I had a K120 and a D120 both with factory 21032 cones wired separately into the same cabinet.
I could easily A/B them. I couldn't (tell) any difference in tone." "Yep, the D series weren't as similar to each other and seemed to vary more in tone. At least when I tried a bunch. The K Series seem more consistent and I liked the way they sounded." "The K Series replaced the D Series in the 70's and had a few small upgrades to it's build. Basically the same speaker. When JBL went to ceramic magnets later on I didn't care much for them. Any of the alnico magnet speakers are considerably better" "The orange frame Ds have cloth surrounds, and are virtually the same as the later K120s. The grey frame Ds originally had paper or doped paper surrounds. Compared to your original Ds, the cloth surrounds have a little more edge to them and not so much fizz. Pushed, they sound more alike.""In a Marshall or Hiwatt cabinet, the results were, well, devastating. Just listen to the Allman Brothers at Fillmore to hear Duane Allman's Marshall amps drive the D-120 equipped 4-12 cabinets he played through.""IMHO, it is THE best speaker made."
