Harry Bettoney Wood Flute

This gorgeous wood flute is another wonderful instrument made by the Bettoney Company at a time when they were one of the best flutemakers in the U.S. With a serial number of 3943, the flute was likely made in the late 1910s. The wood is grenadilla, and the keywork is solid silver with gold springs. A complete overhaul of the flute was done by Pat Nash of Mynett Music just a few weeks ago. New pads and corks all around, and the mechanism been cleaned, polished and adjusted to great playing condition. With a sounding length of 606mm, the flute was built to play at a=435, but I was able to play it at a=440 with very little effort. Lovely, sweet woody sound. Even Pat, who is normally not impressed, commented on how well it played. There was a tiny one inch hairline at the tenon end of the headjoint that has been resealed and is all but invisible; otherwise, the wood is in superb condition.Comes in its original case along with an old swab and the tenon caps, which keep cork grease out of the case. The case itself is in just fair condition with a book tape repair of the hinge and only one closure working, but it protects the flute well. You can buy all of the new Chinese flutes you want, but they won't have the lyric beauty of this antique instrument. If you have never enjoyed the fun of playing a real wood flute, this is your chance to buy one at a very reasonable cost.
