Up for sale, a 1969 Fender Telecaster Thinline in exceptional condition and in perfect working order. This rare and collectable first version of the classic "Thinline" model was only made from late 1968-mid 1971, and this particular example is arguably the rarest and most desirable iteration of all, with a semihollow mahogany body! Featherweight at 6lbs 2oz and extremely resonant acoustically, this Thinline has a clear and powerful tone with a percussive cut and twang that will satisfy the most discerning Nashville pickers. The original pickups produce an array of classic and well rounded Fender tones, with the clarity, snap and sparkle you expect in the bridge position, yet with the added benefit of the mahogany body's rich and warm overall quality. The neck pickup is girthy and plucky sounding, perfect for lead work and complex chording without losing clarity. Both pickups compliment each other very well with original windings and strong output, making this Tele a favorite here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar. The guitar has been professionally setup and dialed in with low action, spot-on intonation, and fresh 10-46 nickel strings. The maple neck has a full medium C profile that fills the palm without venturing into "baseball bat" territory. The profile has generous shoulders with smoothly rounded fretboard edges, and the original gloss finish on the profile that feels great on the palm. To ensure a consistent playing experience, frets 1-3 were replaced with wire of similar width to the original frets present on the rest of the fretboard. The frets have all been leveled and dressed with great care, and while the fretwire is fairly low, we were able to achieve a smooth and well rounded crown on all frets. The original gloss finish is also present on the maple fretboard and in excellent shape with only light play wear into the board itself on the treble side of frets 2-3. The original nut is intact with the standard B width of 1 5/8". On the headstock, the original Fender "F" tuners are intact with clean chrome plating, and the original Fender Telecaster logo (the Thinline portion of the decal was not present on the early Thinline models) is in mint condition. While a different set of tuners was at one time installed on the guitar, the original F tuners were easy to reinstall and the original tuner post holes have not been enlarged. The heel of the neck has the original clear date stamp from April 1969 in black ink. This would be one of the last "traditional" Fender date stamps of the style used throughout the 1960s, as the new numbering system was being integrated during the time of this guitar's production. All of the electronics work as they should, with original CTS pots that date back to the 42nd week of 1966, with this instrument being one of the last to use parts from the huge lot of potentiometers that CBS purchased for Fender in '66 and used through the end of the decade. Both original pickups are intact with original plastic wire, and the light gray bobbin on the bridge pickup has an early four digit date stamp from '69 beneath the copper baseplate. The original chrome bridge and knurled knobs are also present, along with the "top hat" switch tip. The pickguard is a modern replacement made to exact vintage spec and very lightly aged around the edges to match the very faint patina on this exceptionally well kept Thinline. The original guard is included as well for the sake of originality and completeness, although the neck pickup route in the guard and body itself were very minimally enlarged to accommodate a traditional Strat sized single coil at some point in the guitar's life.
The original natural clear gloss finish is quite stunning on this guitar, highlighting the prominent, wide, and straight grain of the mahogany. There's still a gloss sheen to both the body and neck rarely seen on a Tele of this vintage, with only a few extremely faint scratches in the clear coat on the back and some assorted tiny nicks on the back lower bout edge near the input jack. The finish is 100% original with no touchups or overspray and the correct factory stamps are present in the neck pocket. Other extremely minor wear of note consists of one small ding near the edge of the top adjacent to the rear strap button, and a couple tiny marks on the neck profile behind frets 1-4 (typical of an instrument leaned against an amp for a few gigs). This is a truly stunning sounding Thinline Telecaster that is very original and dialed in to satisfy serious gigging musicians and collectors alike. Very few original Thinline models with this pickup configuration are currently on the market, and this mahogany-bodied example is one of the nicest and most resonant we've ever had in our shop! The original black tolex hardshell case with raised Fender logo on the exterior is included. The case has all three of its original working latches, clean original leather handle and case ends, and a plush orange interior.
